Tonight I saw Julie & Julia with a good friend. It inspired me to blog, though I have previously considered it an absurdly self-involved project. In seeing the film, however, I was shown a far more useful side of blogging. The main character, Julie Powell, uses a blog to track her progress of "cooking her way" through Julia Child's cookbook - I have been similarly inspired to follow my academic progress. First, I will follow my progress towards my Master's degree in Sociology, then towards my Ph.D. Although this is still highly self-involved, the perspective showed me how I could merge a diary, accountability, and processing, as well as a slight chance of entertaining or assisting others in academia.
So, here it goes...
I plan to receive my MA in May 2010. I am currently working on my thesis project about Americans who do not believe in god or who believe the existence of god cannot be known (more traditionally called atheists and agnostics). I have gathered my own original data on the topic during summer break, and I will be looking at some national survey data for comparison.
