Here's Chapter three . . . thanks to everyone reading Checkmarks.

Not much happned today... my family came over and kind of, er, set part of our lawn on fire. But hey, doesn't that happen to everyone? Lol. Yep... that's my family for ya.

Aw...I like Mayer. I know it's a first impression, but I do. His first appearance was rather sudden. I loved how he just came through the window. : ) There's something inexplicably amusing there. It says a lot about Jessi's character that he comes to her with his troubles. Sure, it seems like he has a minor crush on her...but he's got guts and she must be good to talk to. I hope he's not on the rebound...it would be icky for Jess. I like how you get the admission essay questions to work in every one of the sections. It always tells a little bit about Jess's character or her past, but you don't overdo it, so it works. It's a good way to give back story and things like that, actually. Good section, can't wait for more, and I'll talk to you later!

thanks... you know, the admission essay questions were actually the idea i had that started the whole story off. when i began writing, that was all i had. i had been reading this college prep site about how so many people dread those questions, and i was thinking about how much of a freak i am, because i LIKE stuff like that. and then i thought... well, hey, there's something that might work. the cool thing is, all those that i've used (at least so far) are real admissions questions from US colleges. and yeah, believe or not, i'm actually really good about the 'everything-happens-this-way-for-a-reason thing in this story. so the whole sudden appearance thing is one of those subtle add-ins to make you think subconsciously about the kind of person mayer is, as well as his coming to jessi saying something about her. oh, and i hope mayer's name isn't too weird... i just thought it was cool, lol.

You just completely boggled my mind. Wow, that was a lot of (somewhat) confusing information. It's cool that you found inspiration in admissions questions...very different. And no, I don't think Mayer's name is too weird...it's unique, so it sticks. Now I'm worried - the whole "subtle add-ins to make you think subconsciously about the kind of person Mayer is" doesn't make me feel any better about his character. : P Of course, he could just be clingy, and all will be well...sorry, whenever I'm reading something and can actually talk to the author, I'm horrible. I start making all these wild guesses and asking obnoxious questions...so bear with me. I'll read. And annoy. Both together.

haha, no mayer's not exactly clingy... i should add that maybe i didn't mean to put in all the subtle add-ins. also, keep in mind that i've put a bunch in for jess, too.

and sorry about the utter chaos of my last comment... i just kinda went on brain overload today, and everything came out in a whoosh... but you get the general idea, i'm hoping.

lastly... wild guesses are actually very very helpful because they let me know something from a more impartial point of view. i know you'll understand this, being a writer yourself, but it's horrible knowing what's going to happen because you lose track of what you know because it's written, and what you know because it's in your head. so you start leaving important clues out and such. (lol. can you tell i suck with plots?) oh and hey, you mentioned in one of your other posts you might have to dump your story on me... i'd be happy to read it anytime.

ok, ok, sorry to write so much, but one more quick thing that's important to keep in mind when judging mayer's character:

he just broke up with his girlfriend of 2 years. i'm not necessarily saying that he's on the rebound, but i am saying that he's not exactly calm and cool-headed. so if he seemed really spacy or clingy... that's only part of his personality. you'll see more of his 'real' personality in the upcoming chapters.

Hey, I win on writing too much. Look at that. : P Just saw your second comment - I wasn't making bit judgments on Mayer's character - I figured he was a little out of it. I was just commenting on what I got out of it for that section, and I was expecting more of the "real" Mayer later.

It took a rereading or two, but yes, I did figure out the points that were confuzzling me. I totally understand about brain overloads. I have them all the time. I'm sorry, but I just love this sentence you wrote in your comment: "...it's horrible knowing what's going to happen because you lose track of what you know because it's written, and what you know because it's in your head. so you start leaving important clues out and such." After reading it again I got it, and I agree whole-heartedly ( ... )

of course i want to read it... and trust me, if i could stick with a story, mine would be that long too. i was writing 35 page stories when i was in fifth grade, so imagine how that could have turned out if i would have kept writing. ahh. if only i had the gumption to actually keep at a story. *sigh*

oh, and, as you may have realized... i am (along with blythie) the champion of run on sentences...

I bow before your mighty sentences, oh champion of run ons.

My present story is the only thing I've ever written that didn't dribble out and die before it really got going...and now I have the opposite problem. I can't get rid of it. The characters have been loose in my head and in my writing for so long they've taken up permanent residence. So now it has to get longer and longer in the hopes they'll go away if I finish. I guess, if you are willing to undertake a large reading project, I'll need your email address, and I'll send you the first bit tomorrow, or the day after. (I can't face it at this hour...and I do have to get off the computer soon.) Other than that, I don't know how to get it to you...so I think I'll stick to email, if it's all right with you.
