LOL.

Lectures started for the year at 8:30am this morning. By 9am, we were all laughing in horror. If this is the way the first hour goes, we're going to be in So. Much. Trouble.

And the lecturer was actually really good. We understood what she was talking about through her extensive explanations and drawings. It was just the sheer horror that the topic required so much explanation that we were goggling at. Especially since we're all used to much less proficient lecturers. She was also very amusing, ranting about the idiots who decided to name PAI-1.

It was on hypercoagulability, so we had complicated diagrams that started out with the coagulation cascade, the end of which activates anticoagulation factors, which come back to bite the coagulation cascade in the ass. Arrows! Everywhere!

What it came down to is this: Activated Thrombin (the last product in the coagulation pathway) binds to thrombomodulin, activating Protein C and S which inhibit PAI which inhibits tPA which acts on Plasminogen changing it to Plasmin which acts on Fibrin clots breaking them down to fibrin degradation products! So if you have a Protein C deficiency do you have increased clotting or decreased clotting?

Watch us wail in horror.

We proceeded to have 3 more lectures after that. None of them were quite as horrible, but none of the lecturers were as good either, so we maintained about the same level of lost-ness throughout the whole day.

I'm so glad we only have one day of lecture a week. More than that, and my head may just explode.

Great lord the maid and grandma have made mum mad again, and now she's sniping at everyone after yelling at them.
