Drabble #28

When Jimmy was a boy, he'd pictured himself with a sort of white picket fence life. Not with a girl, of course, Jimmy was young and he didn't want to catch their germs and had no interest in the touch of any lips against his. No, his perfect life back then involved a pet dog to greet him when he got home instead. When he grew up, he still sported the fantasy of a white picket fence life. The two story house and the 2.5 kids.
He really had it made for awhile. He had the perfect house, the wife. The kids were still a work in progress but Claire was brilliant. He'd have been happy with just her. He still didn't have the dog.
That all went out the window. Of course. Because, quick and harsh, Jimmy learned that white picket fences and happily ever afters didn't exist.
The fence is brown, actually. Old wood with a few broken pieces. Not artfully broken pieces that cross in the middle. Just a fence in disrepair. Jimmy loves the fence anyway. He keeps telling Dean and Castiel that he'll fix it but he never does, he doesn't really want to. That's his broken fence and he doesn't think of it as a symbol of his broken dream. Just that a new one has taken its place.
Laughter drifts from deeper in the house. Castiel's. Dean's follows it. Jimmy keeps staring out at his fence.
Happily ever afters are possible. The white fence doesn't need to be white for it to mean the same thing.
