The Universe decided that I needed a dog. I've been hunting around for a rescue, searching petfinder and such, for quite a while now. I really wanted to find a Shiba Inu, purebreed or mix. Something about that breed just makes me smile. Found one, and someone adopted her before I could. I stopped looking two days ago.
This afternoon Jason called me and said there was an injured stray dog out behind Autozone. We agreed that I should come and scoop her up and take her to the vet. I think to myself, if she looks like what I wanted...and of course, she does. Poor thing was trembling like mad, not all of it from the below freezing temps. Jason said she wouldn't let anyone get close to her, until he walked up. She rode to the vet's office beautifully. Managed to get her to eat a few treats while we waited. Here's the run down: She's a chow mix according to the vet. I swear she looks like she has a little Shiba in her too, and something else. Somewhere between 2 and 5 years old. Heartworm negative (thanks for small miracles). No fleas. Several small lacerations on her legs and a nick on her belly, all superficial. Dangerously thin. The poor thing has a black eye! Something is wrong with her hips and/or her rear left leg. Vet says she's been hit by a car at least twice, most likely the last hit was within 48 hours. When they brought her back to the exam room from getting her weighed, she had started to wag her tail a bit. She's got pain meds, and antibiotics. And she tried to get in the truck by herself.
She walked around Petco beautifully. And tried to get in the truck by herself. She really did try, poor dear. She took her pills without a problem, and is now eating and drinking, though I do have to bring the bowl to her at the moment. It hurts her just to sit up or shift positions. We think she's house-broken and she knows what her leash is. As soon as I picked it up, she got up and came right over. And what great tail-wagging! She acted like a normal dog for a little while, walked around outside, she does pull at her lead a bit. After her jaunt outside, she felt up to exploring the house with us a bit, and then straight back to her little bed.
She doesn't really make any noise. She whimpered a tiny bit because she wanted Jason to pet her, and makes a tiny little sound when she shifts. So quiet. Such a good girl.
Hopefully soon we'll see a little more personality and be able to name her. I'm tempted to call her Inu (EEnoo) - Japanese for "dog." Something meaning quiet, calm or stoic might work. Eh.
