I'm only saying this because I actually ran a TCG myself - and I know that the LJ format is easier to set up, but it becomes a gigantic pain in the butt to manage as the game grows. Handing out prizes manually is extremely time-consuming, and the more members you get, the more prizes you need to handle per game. It gets tiresome to members after a while, too, since they have to manually update their posts and such.

A website is a lot more difficult to set up since it requires coding, and takes paying for a server (which advertisement may not cover), of course, so it's not the ideal choice unless you're willing to part with some money. After it is set up, though, it's ridiculously easier to manage, since you can set up scripts to automate everything for you.

Both options have advantages and disadvantages, but having run an LJ TCG I'd personally go for the website option (provided I had the cash for it). I remember spending hours upon hours working on prizes, making sure members weren't cheating, updating posts and so forth - believe me, it stopped being fun really fast.

Well, I have my own domain, so that isn't a problem, but I've been a part of the animetcg for over a year now and I've seen how they do things, so I'm willing to take the risk of hard work in order to manage it. Besides, I don't even know if a lot of people will join, so I don't really want to go through the trouble of setting it up when I don't even know what path it'll take.

And like I said before, it's a group thing, and the others like the LJ format a lot, so we're just kind of sticking with it without trying to make things complicated. They've had experiences with modding LJ TCGs too, so they're fine with it.
