Movie time.

So I watched the final Matrix movie the other night, and while everyone else is commenting on the movie and completed series, I would instead like to comment on one of the previews. I watched a preview for a movie called Troy, which as a bit of a mythology nut, you can bet I will be seeing it in theatres. So in this preview we saw shots of a screen full of ships, probably about 1000 of them, and a shot of the Trojan horse. So obviously this movie is going to involve the story of Helen of Troy. Hers is the face that launched 1000 ships. She was supposed to have been the single most beautiful human that ever lived. After all how many wars have been fought purely to obtain the love of a single woman. So I’m asking myself this question. What actress can live up to the challenge of being the most beautiful woman on earth? How could Hollywood even begin to pick the person to fill that role? It has been suggested that they may simply not show her face. I’ll admit that doing that would be an interesting artistic effect, more easily pulled off if the movie is an action flick, more about the war for the woman than about the woman herself. I find myself doubting that they would use this option though. Now I’m sure if I went looking I could find out who has been chosen for this movie. If the previews are out the movie is doubtlessly finished, and the information about the actors staring in it would be available. Finding out the identity of this actress though is not the point of my pondering, I’m simply pondering about the challenge such a role would represent, and if any human alive should be bold enough to put a face on the woman of such a well known myth. Of course since this story is not a part of the Christian mythology, no such thought will be given to weather or not they are justified in trying to hold a second woman up to be equivalent in beauty to Helen of Troy. So instead of questioning their right to define, and therefore limit the beauty of Helen, I’ll simply enjoy the movie and be glad that a it is being done to help preserve the myths of another culture.
