I'm sad. I found out yesterday that due to a market shift my company is dropping out of a business, and letting go a couple employees who were tied closely with that business. One of them is a good friend, and I'm not sure how to act. He's staying on through the beginning of next month, and we have lunch often. Should I act like nothing is wrong? Should I offer further condolences?
Its really weird because I know that he's the income source for his family, and I'm concerned about him being able to provide. He's talented, and I know he'll be able to find work, but having come off a tough unemployment period myself, it takes time and was very stressful, and I'm single. I can't imagine having the responsibility of a family in addition.
Perhaps that's part of the awkwardness: While I'm sad for him, I'm grateful that it wasn't me. And I think I feel guilty about that.
