Amazed, but sad

Officer Dillion Stewart was killed in the line of duty yesterday. He was the first NYPD officer to die this year, a truly amazing thing considering how dangerous this city can be.

Officer Stewart and his partner saw a car run a red light and attempted to pull the person over. The suspect opened fire five times, hitting Officer Stewart in the 1/4 inch gap between his bullet proof vest and his arm. The bullet entered his heart.

The amazing thing is, Officer Stewart continued driving - pursuing the suspect to a garage where he escaped for the time being. It was only then that the officer realized that he'd been shot and his colleagues raced him to the hospital. Unfortunately, his heart had just taken too much damage and the doctors couldn't save him.

The suspect has since been arrested. But it's too little, too late. He's also the prime suspect in a shooting from earlier in the month.

Even after being shot in the heart, Dillion Stewart kept doing his job, kept going, kept protecting the city. He'll be missed, but I'm so glad that people like him are willing to do the job.
