So, last night I had an adventure. A stray cat ran in front of me... which is really not all that unusual in the area, there are a ton of strays. However, unlike nearly all of them, this one stopped dead, worked his way back under the fence and twined around my ankles when I clicked my tongue at him. Usually, the stray gives me a look and heads for the hills, these are feral city cats. Not this one.. this one wanted love and food, preferable the food please.
Thank the gods for cell phones. I called
bardicstorm immediately and had him snage a bowl and some of the cat food we'd gotten to feed the stray kittens earlier this year. And the stray followed me all the way down the sidewalk, up my stairs and onto my porch where he proceeded to eat about two cups of cat food while trying to get love and snuggles from both of us at the same time.
I melted.
But - we have a cat. Her name is Onyx and she means the world to me. I am not putting her in danger for a stray no matter how loving.
bardicstorm and I called every place we could think of before finally being connected to Animal Care & Control. Who, of course, only pick up between the hours of 8am and 6pm. And it's 7pm by this point. Damn it they make it hard to help an animal get off the street.
bardicstorm shut Onyx in the bedroom (that went well with the spoiled princess) and cleared a path to the spare bedroom. I coaxed the little man (and yes, we can tell) up part of the steps and then carried him the rest when he balked. Some claws out, but only at the indignity of being scooped up, not directed at me and no struggling.
Once we had him shut in the bedroom, we scrambled around the house finding Onyx's old food bowl and her old litter pan. Filled those up and took them in where little man had discovered the really soft soft blanket and had curled up on that. We put stuff down for him and gave him a couple more pets and loves and then left the room to conduct damage control with Onyx.
That.. took awhile. Onyx definitely objected to
bardicstorm's knees smelling like anyone but her. And the door that little man is behind took some sniffing with a huge tail. But eventually she settled down on my lap to watch TV, although the chicken from dinner may have played a part in her placation.
So, this morning I am calling AC&C again so they will come and get little man. I wish we could keep him - he's a darling little man. But, we can't. We need to ensure that we have the money to care for the cat that is ours now. And she would be hurt to not be the only cat in the home, although I am sure she'd get over it eventually. But Onyx is my baby girl. AC&C is good about adoptions, although they are not a no-kill shelter, and little man is a sweetheart and not very old so he'll find a good home.
I just wish it was easier for people to help the animals around here. They certainly put in some massive hoops to jump through. If we didn't have an extra bedroom to lock him into, we'd have been out of luck and would have simply had to leave him on the streets.
