Twenty-nine
There was a lot to think about.
Too much to think about and to explain.
When he asked Toma where he wanted to go, he meant somewhere not Japan. With Kiiroi pressing upon them it was impossible to find freedom here, they’d be badgered sooner or later.
But they were going to Hokkaido as Eito had promised them earlier in the day before seeing them off to a nearby inn.
But Jun wasn’t thinking about all that because after a very long time he had mustered the courage to hold Toma, to kiss him. With a faulty, lumbering plan he felt that at least he was doing something and it had brought a surge of confidence through him.
Toma hadn’t needed him to be doing anything. Melted into Jun’s kiss without weighing worth or purpose.
In a way Toma had been waiting. He felt his heart beat accelerate whenever Jun was near him and the almost audible thumps against his chest reassured him that he was alive.
It was an anchor rooting him down to the soil; mortal and vulnerable but alive.
Thirty
His gun was out even before he broke the kiss and no sooner had he pointed it at the door did it burst open.
The thump of flesh hitting ground was succeeded by faster click of boots, much louder than the faint ticks behind the closed door that had set about the wheel of paranoia within Jun.
Two more lifeless bodies joined the first one at the floor.
The room was eerily quiet after three earsplitting gunshots. The sound had dissipated reverberating across the corners of the room in harmless waves but reminiscent of what just happened.
Jun spotted Toma pressed up against the wall looking at the bodies and the surrounding pool of blood in utter paralysis.
His head swarmed, for a moment he wanted to drop down in a heap on the floor, in mock of the people he just killed but in the next second the realization of betrayal dawned on him and in a moment of rage and suspicion he grabbed Toma and stormed out.
