This doesn't really look like "out in the scrub" ....
... and it was valued at $1 mil and was several times larger than the other houses around it, in a neighborhood where many of the military elite reside. Or so I have heard.
It was a compound, but it wasn't little, nor was it out in the scrub-it was 1,000 feet from the military academy in a residential neighborhood.
Compared to my apartment, it was certainly a mansion!
Context is still bad. It's not anything like what a westerner would recognize as a mansion. Have you seen pictures of it? It's really a bunker of sorts, more built for security than built for luxury. To be sure, it was luxurious by local standards. He was filthy rich after all.
I guess I'm reacting to the whole "Living in the lap of luxury in Iran" line I got from my cabbie last night.
Do you like this better?throwingstardnaMay 3 2011, 16:21:10 UTC
"Also, since Osama was not hiding in a cave somewhere in the Afghani/Pakistani hinterlands, but instead living in a newly-constructed compound 35 miles from the capital, in a city that is basically the cradle of Pakistan's military elite, can we stop pretending they are our friends and giving them billions of dollars?"

Ha! Yeah I read the post the first time :P
You know, if you told me that Osama was living next to a school, I would not have been able to think of anything more unsettling... until you told me he was living next to a Pakistani military academy.

OK, but pretend I never said "suburban mansion" and instead said "newly-constructed compound in a residential neighborhood." My point had nothing to do with how nice the house was, but where it was located.
I miss live journal. This is justs like the old days. Jumping to conclusions was what it was all about :)
I am indeed overwhelmed by how much people jump to conclusions and what the reality is when it gets filled in. See my post from yesterday on the subject. It might explain my (in retrospect) kinda weird reaction to all of this.

For reasons I can't understand I still seem to be obsessed with this "mansion" description. The local real-estate market is less impressed, but $250000 is still a lot of money.
There's a whole bunch of weird stuff floating around. Propaganda, misinformation, mistakes... Osama's daughter even claims he was executed after being captured.
I must have better things to do :)
