Baby birds are a challenge. It is the one thing that brings out my maternal side (more so than my dogs even!) It is a project that I take on, and I love every second of it. Sadly the success rate is not very high. I have had a few successes (the most memorable being a mourning dove, my favourite of all birds)... but I seem to forget that in most cases they get injured in the fall from the nest, and fixing them up is beyond my capabilities. I try, but it often ends in disappointment.

Yesterday a friend brought a baby starling in to the store, and I took it under my wing (pun intended!). He seemed to be quite strong, and ate well - although I had to force feed... I set my alarm to go off every hour for feeding, and I woke up for the second time to find he had died. :(

I wasn't expecting to happen across another baby so soon, but I just got home from a park play with my dogs, to find baby #2 waiting - quite literally - right outside my door. I'm going to do better this time. I am currently cageless, but I have an aquarium with a wire lid, that will come in handy for keeping Chaos out... I'm going to hook up a light for warmth, and make it nice and cozy. Feeding will occur every 1/2 hour, and every hour through the night... I don't know what I'll do during the superdogs tomorrow, perhaps take it along in my bag, and bring a container of bread soaked in milk for feeding inbetweeen shows. I think I've bitten off more I can chew this weekend!

Wish me luck with little one #2 - I'll need it! Good thing I'm determined!
