May 18, 2016 08:46

The X-Men had left New York for an island off San Francisco that they called Utopia, which Scott was running as the new base of operations. Kitty had known about that, but it was kind of weird to be here as a guest, where she didn't have her normal room, where she often didn't know where things were. It felt off ( Read more... )

Clint came up behind Kitty and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. "I'll say this about Utopia, it's got a nice view," he said, hugging her.

"Definitely can't complain about this part," she said, turning her head to give him a kiss. "Bad reason to see San Francisco again, but..."

"Yeah, I know. The memorial was nice," Clint said, sighing softly. "Is it me, or is everything else more weird than normal?"

"No, things are weird," Kitty confirmed, leaning into him a little. "I didn't consider how bad this would hit everybody. And I definitely didn't get the team politics involved."

"Well, you've been away. Clearly, you're the glue that keeps things going," Clint said, only partly teasing. "You need to get people to keep you in the loop more often. Or just tell you what the hell is going on."

He wasn't entirely wrong about the glue thing. Just wait till whenever she gets to AvX.

"Usually they're pretty good about it, but I don't know why people are mad at Scott about this, and I'm not sure I'm going to find out. My usual sources of info are either grieving, dead, or Illyana," she sighed.

"I'm surprised Illyana hasn't been around," Clint said lightly. He knew she was important to Kitty, so he didn't want to say anything outright bad about her. "I don't know why people are mad at Scott either. I mean, he's not the easiest to be around most of the time, but it's not like he's not broken up about this."

"It might just be because he's in charge. When you take on the leader role, you get some responsibility in what happens, no matter how much you were involved or not," Kitty pointed out.

"Remind me to leave Cap in charge all the time," Clint muttered. "Do you want to stay around for a while? Maybe see if you can patch things up with everyone?"

"I'm not sure there's really anything for me to patch up. I think everybody really just needs to deal," Kitty said thoughtfully. "If Logan doesn't wanna talk, he won't talk. Peter's got my number and he'll use it if he needs to. Scott will handle it like he always does, and whatever's going on with Illyana is bigger than this." She totally recognized the problems there, some of which involved literal soul-stealing. "I think I just need to let people heal in their own ways."

Clint gave Kitty a smile and hugged her again. "You are definitely the mature one in this relationship. I think that's always going to be on you," he said. "What else do you need? From me, I mean."

"You're doing it," she said, finding his hand to clasp it with hers. "Sorry you've been getting so much practice at that 'being there for Kitty' thing lately."

"If I remember correctly, I kind of stood in front of everyone and promised I'd do that," Clint said, smiling softly. "Don't worry, I'm sure things will go to shit for me sooner or later and you'll have to take care of me."

"And I am totally up for that when the time comes," Kitty told him. "I'm pretty sure we're owed nothing but good things at some point, right?"

"A winning lottery ticket that takes us to a private beach where we can do nothing but relax for a month... something like that?" Clint asked.

"Only a month? You are lowballing your wishful thinking," Kitty smiled. "We need at least two. Maybe in different locations so no one can find us."
