i used to have a "some jokes about death that some of the kids just don't get" death cab icon

last night, annakovsky and i saw death cab for cutie. important notes:

(1) there is a boy of a certain age (mostly boys my own age, give or take three years in either direction) who clearly learned how to dance during the brief popularity of ska music, and now every time they dance, they're dancing to ska music. there was a kid classically pulling this move standing in front of us last night. as you can imagine, death cab is not ska music.

(2) this kid was more awesome than just your average ska nostalgist -- he was definitely there with his girlfriend but he was also bromancing pretty hard with the guy he was with. at one point they linked arms and swayed back and forth during "i'll follow you into the dark." annakovsky points out that they sure are breeding a different kind of fratboy these days. i feel old.

(3) about halfway through the show, ben gibbard starts the "hi, let me say something about your city to prove i can remember what city i am in" portion of the proceedings, and he says something about how we all seem to like our red sox caps -- cheers -- but he's not sure we need with the green red sox cap -- light booing -- with the shamrock -- full chorus of boos. eventually he awkwardly said, "uh, okay, i take it back, you guys keep wearing your green hats!" and said he had never fucked up this badly on stage. you guys, the crowd booed ben gibbard! this is like kicking a kitten, y/n? not that i don't agree, i was just pretty impressed with latent asshole zealotry that lurked in the hearts of even the most mild-mannered death cab fans. our very effective brainwashing, let us show you it.

today, i spent the entire day cooking various things for later in the week. nothing particularly complicated, but it did all add up in a pleasing sense of accomplishment way:

- egg salad
- ginger limeade
- tortilla chips (with store-bought tortillas, i'm not that bad-ass)
- refried black beans (with garlic, jalapenos, cilantro, lime juice and caramelized onions)
- salsa (with red peppers and corn)
- grilled chicken (marinated in tequila, cilantro and lime juice)
- couscous salad (with artichoke hearts, roasted asparagus and caramelized onions)
- marinated goat cheese

my best betty crocker, concerts
