some good things:
[a] praise allah and ABBA, the ark have put out a new single:
absolutely no decorum it is, of course, gay and swedish and glam and AWESOME. springfield and i spend a lot of time talking about the ark (um ... obviously) and how their music is all of those aforementioned things, but how we also find a lot of their songs to be, secretly, incredibly moving. underneath all the glitter and the max martin swedish-to-english dictionary, there's a really deep earnestness there, sort of a love songs for the rest of us sort of sentiment. i remember, this past summer, i listened to "it takes a fool to remain sane" probably five or ten times a day because part of the bridge made it the only song that seemed to understand all of my wretched, abortive feelings. and so i was embarrassingly happy to put this song on my ipod, because ola salo always knows that the best cure for your own melodrama is someone else's melodrama plus synthesizers.
[b] charles barkley talks about the tim hardaway thing:
"you would have to be an idiot to think you'd never played with someone who's gay." i don't know how many of you have been following
this story, but sir charles brings up two points that could stand to get a little more air time: [1] when person of color expresses homophobic opinions, it's not just prejudice, it's also lateral oppression and [2] the media does a disservice to both athletes and the direction of the discourse when the question is framed as "what would you do if you had a gay teammate?" because the question is probably not an "if" question.
[c] last night,
smartlikejustin and i went to see
the apples in stereo.
the band has six members, and three of them were wearing street clothes in various states of disarray, one was wearing a shiny space suit getup with cape and two were wearing the remnants of matching black three-piece suits with bright coral pink shirts. (one had the complete outfit intact, one had lost his jacket and tie but still had the vest.) it gave the impression that they'd had six matching outfits at one point, but had since fallen on hard times. and because i spent the better part of a year going to concerts and thinking of them as fact-finding missions for
peter_and_fran, i leaned over at one point and said, "and then there was the time dom and billy insisted playing every show on the tour wearing the suits they wore when they were ushers at karl and cate's wedding."
also, we decided that there should probably be a hipster equivalent to
bourgetarded. stretch (hipster + wretch) was contemplated, but the jury's still out.
