it wouldn't take much to show you

--you know, last year on my birthday, i was too hungover to properly function and it was all co-worker!n's fault that time, too.

but other than that, my birthday was quite nice and i ate pancakes and we saw a mostly enjoyable but ultimately spectacularly abortive sox game from really good seats. this morning i woke up feeling as though i was wrapped in a wet blanket of all the birthday-related ennui i swore i wasn't going to have this year, which blew, but i attempted to shake it off by going to a bar to drink mimosas and watch the patriots game, because i've decided it's time to let the 49ers dynasty of my youth go and see if i can re-commit to football. i told the pm, i'm viewing the time i spend watching the patriots this month the same way that a businessman rationalizes that sleeping with his secretary is actually saving his marriage. it's my hope that if the patriots win games, it will allow me to return renewed to my lately mostly winless celibate marriage to the red sox. and the patriots delivered first thing by staging a nice come-from-behind win, with the game-winning score being a SAFETY, my favorite scoring play in all of football, because it combines 1) humiliation of the other team, 2) points for your team, 3) the ball being returned to your possession and 4) very little effort on your part.

sga: mckay and mrs. miller

my favorite part was where rodney tried to convince jeanie to come with him by telling her that the two of them working together was what their father would have wanted. because i feel like the fanon that says that rodney's parents were too busy fighting with and hating each other to pay attention to their children is one of the most completely pervasive (i feel like i've read variations on "i hated my parents because they hated each other" in SO MANY STORIES i can only assume that there are some people who think it's canon) and totally unfounded pieces of fanon in that totally fanon-happy fandom (HOW MANY TIMES HAVE LIGHTS IN THAT CITY ACTUALLY LIT UP FOR JOHN? I MEAN. REALLY. HOW MANY ACTUAL TIMES OH MY GOD).

so the idea that rodney's father was also a physicist and that rodney's motivations don't stem from trying to be noticed but rather from trying to be just like is dad, that's enjoyable and different.

okay, furthermore: i am actually making this post from work, because i had to stop here on my way home to pick up some books, and the security guard totally didn't want to let me in because "uh, i think they're closed on sundays" and i was like "uh, i work there" and she gave me the eye and i bet is anxiously waiting for me to come downstairs. sadly, this happens every time i come in on a weekend day. another year older, and still nobody believes that i am old enough to be a working professional. dammit.

red sox nation, we built this city on rock and roll, oh how the wine talks
