four things that are awesome:
benefit lipscription -- a couple days ago, i mentioned to the new kid that i needed to get some new lip balm because i accidentally let the stick that i had go through the washer. the new kid, who works at sephora, said, "i can probably get you some of that," and last night she brought me not just lip balm but this lip buffing/lip exfoliating combo. i cannot in good conscience ever encourage you to buy these items if you don't have a roommate who can pilfer them, but OH MY GOD LIP EXFOLIATION.
taco bell caramel apple empanada -- last night, springfield and i went to The Mall (aka the cambridgeside galleria) after work, a trip that involves a shuttle bus and a slow decent into commercial consumer hell. but there is only (1) apple store and (2) taco bells in all of boston, and while we went for the former, we stayed for the latter. after i ate the caramel apple empanada, i felt like i probably needed to go have myself tested for diabetes. but it was worth it, oh yes, oh yes indeed.
the adventures of pete & pete season 2 -- out on DVD today!!1!!1! thanks to
smartlikejustin for the reminder in the form of a newbury comics blurb that reminds me that season two contains the episode "farewell my little viking." afsdlksdfajlk;sdfajlkasfjlk;alk;a
bruce springsteen: complete video anthology 1978-2000 -- the new kid checked this out of the library and we watched pretty much the entire two disc set last night, with several repeat performances. the new kid may have, at one point, expressed interest in writing a fan letter to the director of "dancing in the dark," aka bruce springsteen: american gigolo. i forget over and over that i LOVE bruce springsteen, and i weren't locked in a battle to the death with apple support right now, i would add 86 bruce springsteen songs to my ipod.
one thing that is not awesome:
the exodus of theo epstein. three immediate thoughts: 1) now what are drunk girls who have their bachelorette parties at fenway going to put on the back of their fake jerseys? 2) for once, my sentiments are summed up by the herald, with the back headline of THANKS LARRY being the inverse in awesomeness to "thanks beautiful." 3) as i said to
minervacat yesterday, when she commented to say that it's her least favorite time of year (not-baseball season), between theonanigans and manny demanding a trade, it barely even feels like non-baseball season. but not in a good way.
one thing tangentially about true love in a SHACK:
on friday, i made my request for
shacking_up secret santa, and i was reminded of a particular time frame in marauders canon that i am in love with, but does not strictly exist. let me explain:
what i said i wanted was a story set during the first war, post-hogwarts and pre-halloween 1981 but also before the point at which remus and sirius were both convinced the other was the traitor and james and sirius were cooking up the double cross that got everybody fucked.
this is my thing: the lexicon tells me that the marauders leave hogwarts in the spring of 1978, harry is born in the summer of 1980, everything goes boom in the fall of 1981. in my head, a lot of what's going on between 1978 and 1980 is anchored by james, and the idea that since leaving school he's changed into this person who is a) subdued by having wooed and married lily, b) worried about bringing a kid into the world and c) probably made more serious about this whole thing because his parents have recently died/been killed. (james' parents = alive as late as his seventh year to invite sirius to brunch, but confirmed by JKR to be dead by the time james and lily are killed, and that's why harry has to go live with the dursleys. so sometime in that three year time frame, and probably ... not from old age.)
and i totally think that all that stuff happened, but i also think that there was probably about a year or so, when they were just out of school, and they were all "we're bad-ass new gods! dumbledore asked us to join the order! things are pretty grim right now, but we're going to save the wizarding world and be big! damn! heroes!" in my head, it's sort of like a cross between ocean's 11 and the first twenty minutes of revenge of the sith, with the crazy heist missions and the witty banter and the certain doom and the cockiness. eh? eh?
what i am saying is that i would love to read or write a crazy order-related mission story. there could be magical disguises. and also, obviously, remus and sirius would be in love.
