Sora’s story- warnings for BBS spoilers.

Personality:
Sora is the persona of acceptance and youth. When it comes to first impressions, Sora has a way of exhibiting himself freely; he doesn’t act with different characteristics like most would when faced with new people in comparison to old friends. He’s childlike and very companionable, taken to liking whoever he comes across without inhibition aside from very few exceptions. In addition to this he also shows an eagerness that borders upon brash to exposing himself to any new experiences and sights that come his way.

“I’d like to see it too- along with any other worlds out there. I wanna see ‘em all!” Sora’s ability to take to change with ease is exhibited through the vastly differentiating worlds he comes across, along with the people inside them. Although he does exhibit a sense of caution that develops further as he goes along, most times he’ll accept things as they are from a mere cursory glance- that is to say, he’ll remain wary to the point where something catches his interest, which generally doesn’t take very long.

Sora’s likability shines through where a keen intelligence does not. Admittedly, he isn’t the brightest of people; he’s easily distracted and oftentimes needs some sense of guidance to get from point A to point B, without making B point Z. His curiosity and gullibility around others makes for an easy weakness, though he does show some sense to remain questionable and hesitant around shadier faces.

These faults being covered, Sora is more than capable of taking care of himself. He has a strong sense of right and maintains a very opinionated perspective on the rights and wrongs of the universe in general; “And right now it’s telling me you’re on the wrong side!” His sense of self is also very strong, one based on a foundation of friendships that spans in a wide arch across the distance of the universe, with two people at its base.

Riku, one of his two best friends, is the drive which keeps him moving forward to gaining more strength and seeing new sights, and is on the whole a particularly brilliant influence in Sora’s life who has seen him through every age to become the person he is today. Sora’s willingness to learn and acceptance that he does make mistakes, isn’t always the best, and can be better seems to acutely stem from the constant contention between Riku and himself, a rivalry that often favors the elder rather than the perky brunette. Sora’s faith in his friend is rather unshakable, and he admits in Kingdom Hearts 2 that he always wanted to be more like his older friend, showing both a humility and modest approach to how he views himself in terms of skill and strength.

On the same spectrum as Riku is Sora’s second best friend, Kairi, who imbues within him a caution of Riku that allows him to take in the other’s faults, not a particularly easy action to attempt. Teenage boys are more liable to withdrawing from the female presences in their lives at Sora’s age, due to a need to look mature and show independence; however Sora himself, as well as Riku still appear to treat Kairi with the same amount of inclusion as they do each other, although at a different level. Kairi is therefore another example of the acceptance and ease that Sora takes to everyone, even those heavily included in his life that could very well be pushed away with his age and development. His promises to Kairi are as much of a drive to him as his need to pull Riku back from the darkness is as well.

Between the both of them, it’s easy to see why Sora is such a happy and pleasant person- treated with the love and affection the two have provided, Sora is very well balanced to undertake hardship with the confirmed belief that at the end of the day, everything will be okay. This constantly shows in every world he visits- no matter the danger or extent of the threat, Sora will always be the first to step forward and offer a helping hand, because- everything will be okay.

Despite Sora not being aware of it, there is one last relationship that heavily affects him. Ventus', a bygone keyblade master’s heart rests within Sora, despite the boy having lost the memories of the event itself. Whilst Ventus himself shows little influence in whom and how Sora is, it does show his giving nature from the very first day of his life. He's naturally willing to do what he can for complete strangers, no matter the cost. He doesn't worry about the future if he can help people in the present, no matter what the cost and effect later on.

It’s to that end that finds Sora within the canon point I’m taking him from, soon after willingly allowing himself to be taken by the darkness for the health and welfare of one of the most important people in his life. The fact that during this scene, he exhibits far more curiosity and reassurance than actual trepidation merely reinforces his ease in taking whatever may come. With all these aspects to his character, he makes for a reliable friend and a generally fun person to have around. He goes from being the ordinary kid on an adventure, to being the kid with a goal in mind, worlds to save and friends to fight for- still finding some fun along the way.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Sora’s athletic abilities are nothing to laugh at- when one spends their days on an island full of teens without parental supervision, one apparently becomes an acrobat. He has a huge amount of stamina and endurance, with an offensive nature that he seems to favor. During his adventures, Sora has also learned to jump up to rather impressive heights, and glide across relatively long distances. His swimming abilities certainly aren’t what one would call subpar, either.

His weapon consists of a somewhat revered ‘sword’ simply known as the keyblade. It has the ability to lock and unlock the hearts of people and worlds, as well as an assortment of tricks usually accompanied by very impressive lightshows.

The keyblade is, in essence, a bludgeoning weapon; with a chunky make the steel is made for busting heads open, rather than clean kills. It has its own magical ambience that allows it to choose its user, and therefore, transport itself to them across distances both long and short. It also has a very strong damage effect on beings of darkness, and is liable to having them burst into smoke after several blows literally.

On top of this, Sora is magically adapted with several spells, While the effect and strength may vary, his magic does retain to the usual style of elemental styles with a bit of healing, time, and defensive spells tied in. All in all, he’s a certifiable weapon of mass destruction contained within a 14 year old body with a cheesy smile.

Aside from this, Sora has the somewhat intriguing ability to…attract people. And not just people, but their hearts, as well. Specific examples of this include the way he takes in Kairi’s heart during the destruction of Destiny Islands, and during Birth by Sleep, when he both connects his and Ventus’ hearts to keep the other from fading, before accepting his heart fully within himself near the end of the story. A real defining piece of Sora is how strong he is both in person and in heart, and that little pulse pumper seems to be readily available for manipulating other hearts into healing quite simply by Sora maintaining the slightest contact with their owners.

Sora is not the type of person to hold onto fears- he’s a positive thinker, always looking towards the best outcome with the mindset that things can be fixed, and get better. If anything, one of the few times he falters in the first game is when Riku takes back the keyblade, stating “you were just the delivery boy.”

Sora has a dependency on the Keyblade which almost inhibits what he is capable of- though he does learn magic to an extent; no other physical, offensive abilities are learnt, with differing weapons or even with simple fists. Though he does show early in the game that his swordsmanship was prematurely crafted from wooden swords, the keyblade is for a large part of the game what Sora sees as being the cure-all for all problems. Even after exhibiting feats of strength and courage without it, the keyblade still remains a severe crutch for Sora to lean on.

Another problem that Sora has very rarely needed to face, is being useless in the face of certain scenarios. Hollow Bastion is still a good example of this, though Beast’s encouragement brings him back onto his feet. Another occurrence in Kingdom Hearts 2 which exemplifies this in a greater standing would be when the village is burnt down in Land of Dragons, a world based off the movie, Mulan. Sora’s shock, anger, remorse; but most of all, helplessness in the face of such a human act of devastation is pronounced effectively- with a lack of knowledge and understanding of a more human orientated violence, Sora falters in the face of pain caused by blatant cruelty.

Sora was originally designed to be a normal styled boy, which brings the final note of his weaknesses and incapability’s- his self confidence. Once again the keyblade becomes more of a crutch when Sora is put under the shadow of Riku, an unfortunate side effect that they both share. The keyblade becomes a way of being more than the normal boy, of having a one up, and for a while, Sora does develop a rather large head on the subject. He is not a junior hero above his own flaws and fears, which is what makes him so approachable and understandable in hindsight.

First Person Sample:
…Like 100 to five, now! [You’d almost think he was irritated, not truly paying attention to the PokéGear, not expecting it to be on. In fact its on a wooden table top, with a well placed visual of the room at large, although Sora himself is nowhere near it, far more concerned with trampling the carpet than fiddling with the device itself. A less than human hand pulling away from the device certainly answers why its on at all, with a cheeky grin and some purple fuzz merely solidifying the evidence against Sora’s new partner.]

I’ve gotta catch up. No way am I staying behind. Do you think whoever wins gets to name the Elite Four whatever they want?

[The idea is…kind of appealing. Sora steps into view, slowing to a halt in the middle of the room and spacing out completely, imagining; suppose you just; won and announced it was going to be called-]

B-but that’s not the point! [He shakes his head vigorously. Back on track, Sora!] The point is, I gotta catch up before he leaves me behind.

We’ll go on an adventure together this time…right? Like we were supposed to! [He smacks his fist into the palm of his opposite hand, and the pacing resumes. Set posture, determined expression. It’s all serious thought today, something meant to be done in privacy.] Pokémon masters, just me and-

Hey, what’s my…

Riku! [The recording light on his Gear finally triggers realization, and Sora bodily tackles the table, messing with the buttons for a few moments before sitting upright, narrowing his eyes at the controls. Aipom one, Sora zero. At least she lives up to her name.]

At least you didn’t hide it, this time. But did you have to turn it on?

Third Person Sample:
Had it really been almost a year since he last stood on a beach of any kind?

There was a saying that the difference between memory and nostalgia, is that nostalgia is painful. Sora could almost understand that now; standing at the shoreline, shoes off, the very edges of his toes wet all the more each time the waves came in from the ocean. It smelled like salt. The sea itself was deep and blue, the sky vivid, with few clouds to punctuate the clarity.

Still wasn’t home though. The ocean was too blue, the sky too cloudless, the beach empty of all but sand and rocks- no trees, no rainforest, no seaside shack- the reality of it was that he still wasn’t home, after all this time. It used to be that each new world was an adventure too great to take his mind from, but with everything that had happened to him so far, there was a small ache, a want…

But whoever had time to dwell when a ball was flying towards their face at top speed? It takes some careful maneuvering- a flail, a quick duck, and though his hands fly upwards, the quick snatching motions of his fingers cause the ball to be fumbled down to the ground.

“Eight to ten.” Riku drawls it out, always that little bit ahead, watching as Sora picks the ball up, dusts off the sand and looks up with a determined expression. He’s just a little bit behind, that’s all- but he can catch up!

Maybe that’s why he keeps on smiling. Riku the female Aipom has no qualms with getting right into the water, bullying a sea faring creature possibly twice her strength. There was no care to what was going through her trainer’s mind, the actions of two teens playing ball with a little more destiny at their backs apart from becoming Pokémon masters. Sora doesn’t think for even a second that the journey will end here.

He takes aim carefully, throwing the ball in a wide, fast arc that Riku seems to have little trouble dealing with. That’s okay. At least, he thinks its okay, now. One more new world before going back to the life which holds a greater sense of urgency than Sora ever thought it could. One more world- and a ball thrown into his face.

Sora sputters, falling back into the sand and looking over to Riku- the other Riku. The elder teen has a smirk on his face, a hint of a challenge that Sora certainly won’t back down from. Be it blitzball, or volley- even something as simple as catch, Sora’s up on his feet and ready to face the challenge.

His heart feels lighter, just from that. He doesn’t need to see Destiny Islands again, not just yet. Not even in another year. Because home- that’s where the heart is.

He’s got enough home right here on the beach, almost enough to last him a lifetime.
