In which she gives an update on the recovery effort...

Well, I survived Wilma, and for the most part unscathed. Power and phones just came back on last night, so I jumped online the first chance I got (after taking a much needing hot shower) to let you all in the know.

No real damage to the apartment to speak of, except for a small leak inthe master bedroom and the fact that there are trees down everywhere you look. No water damage issues, thank goodness, except for some minor street flooding the day of and immediately afterwards. The only major damage to report is that Skits (my just over two months old car) isn't doing so hot after a ceramic roofing tile did a swan dive through the rear windshield. (Pictures to follow shortly.) Not too sure when I'll be able to get it repaired, since I can't get through to State Farm, but we'll wait and see.

Businesses are starting to open back up, although most are running below capacity, whether they have limited supplies or what not. Actually found a Flanigan's yesterday taking carry-out orders from the front door. Of course, only six items were available from the menu, and no drinks, but at this point a hot meal is a hot meal. We got power turned on at work the other day, so refrigeration should be running soon and we'll be able to keep ice for more than and hour.

All in all I'm pretty surprised by what she did. This is the closest I've ever been to a storm, considering the eye passed within walking distance from here, (the Central/North Broward area), and my last "real" storm was Andrew back in '92, but we were in North Dade and he mainly hit South Dade, anyways... But things look pretty trashed. It's almost impossible to find a tree that's still upright, and the few that are have no leaves to speak of. The area is awfully reminiscent of the Kendall/Homestead area after Andrew, minus the sheer amount of flattened houses (thanks to the strict building codes implemented after said Hurricane). Still, it'll take a good long while before things start looking the way they used to.

More to come later.
