Read an older SGA WIP today that squicked the hell out of me. Well, actually it wasn't the story that wigged me out, it was the readers' comments.
It was an AU and John was abusive, blackmailing Rodney into a 'relationship' with him. By the time Sheppard had gotten Rodney into his home, he had threatened Rodney with violence; with broken bones; with attacks on his closest friends; stalked him; raked up any and all info on his family, friends and probably dead pets; threatened to rape him; sexually molested him; kidnapped him; and basically out-and-out terrorized him.
And the comments are like:
OHMIGodDDQ!!!1! John and Rodney are *so* meant to be together, like 4-ever!!
and while the above wasn't a direct quote, this one is:
"...and you're keeping John redeemable with remorse..."
DUDE! In no WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM are John's actions in these posted parts REDEEMABLE! I have nothing whatsoever against the writer writing this story. I like dark fic. But no: John's actions cannot be redeemed. There is nothing he could possibly do - short of a lobotomy or having been infested with an ancient, evil demon - to redeem his actions towards Rodney McKay.
Now, the story is listed as McShep, so I'm guessing they're eventually going to end up together - lord knows how, but the author says it's done and in beta and sitting at 200 pages, so I'll just go with the flow for now. Again, this rant isn't against the author. (Actually, truth be told, the blackmail setup was brilliant. Rodney was pretty much well and truly fucked, there, because John was relentless in covering his bases.)
But let me repeat one more time in order:
Blackmail
Molestation
Physical assault
Kidnapping
Threatened rape
Yeah, that's someone I'd want falling in love with Rodney. Or vice versa.
