Legit question: Why do authors always insist Castiel or Gabriel or whomever are only a couple thousand years old?

Is this some insanely deeply embedded Creationism thing, or an inability to conceive of Really Old Ages or something else?

I mean, maybe I'm different because my first two fandoms were VampChron and Highlander plus my Ancient History degree, but I've never had issues trying to conceive of Character-X being 10,000, 10 million, or 10 billion years old. (I obviously took that to a whooooooole new level in The Different, go me.)

But especially after 620-The Man Who Knew Too Much where Castiel directly references evolution and being around for said evolution, I just... don't get it.

This comes from one too many stories of one or the other of angels being all, I'm thousands of years old! and then somebody acting like a slapped mackerel over it. One of the more recent reads was Gabriel proclaiming he was 5,000 years old and Sam being all fan-girly over it. What?

You guys danced with the Alpha vampire who was (canon) hundreds of thousands of years old.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

legit question yo!, spn
