Charlie was beside Alanna, enjoying a snack of his own. "The weather's been pretty good," he agreed, "way better than the rain." He brushed a few crumbs off the tunic he was wearing in the silver and blue of the King's Own. The things he was talked into, he noted mildly, and went back to eating. "You think it'll last?"
Alanna shook her head. "The rain will be back any day, and then we'll be up to our necks in mud." She sounded so delightful about this prospect. "Have you heard the latest from the capital?"
"Nah," he said, taking another bite, then speaking with his mouth full just like his mother taught him not to. "Been too busy learning the ropes to listen to news." Which was to say that some of the King's Own weren't exactly ready to accept a complete foreigner as one of their own, so they weren't telling him things. Charlie knew he had to earn respect.
That sunshine really was nice. He idly wondered if they had an ozone layer here.
Alanna nodded, understanding the undertone and copied his wonderful manners. "Thayet got Jon to start those free schools for everyone she wanted." Okay, so that wasn't the official news, but she translated.
