Yuletide Recs 2006, part 2

Askewniverse (Clerks): "Second Verse, Not Exactly The Same As The First" R, (Dante/Randal). I would never have really believed Dante/Randal would work, but it does here. The best part of the story, however, is the language and the hilarious dialogue.
Quote: Jay helps himself to Twinkies, and Ho Hos, and Hostess cupcakes and chili cheese Pringles and a bottle of ketchup. Then he walks all the way to the back of the store and takes an apple. "I gotta maintain my slender figure, yo," he says, brandishing it and then taking a bite. "Silent Bob won't do chubby guys, even though he is one fat motherfucker."

Egyptian Mythology: "Tales in the Sand"G. This is a lovely story of Anubis seeking out Set for advice on his love life. I love the sweet depiction of the relationship between Set and Ash. It's nice to see a rounded portrayal of Set.

Everything is Illuminated: "Amber" PG-13. This is a beautifully written piece. It captures the haunting feel of the source and has fantastic insight into Johnathan's mind and his collecting. Quote: But maybe this too, like the fields, like the pure blue sky, they're all parts of the same thing. He reaches for the plastic bag but remembers that he can't pack away sky.

Fairy Tales: "Rough Diamond"G. An alternate take on Belle and the Beast. Quote: Stories are sleek and round on the tongue and in the mind, perfect circles of meaning, but truth is mostly far more unsatisfying and messy. Truth is rarely what we wish were true.

Forever Knight: "Afterimage" PG. FK was my first fandom, so of course I have affection for it. But this brought it all back. It's ten years after the series, Nat's point of view. It's simply gorgeous, angsty, and exactly as it must be.

Kill Bill: "Worth It" Marked NC-17, but for violence. A brief look at O-Ren as a young assassin for hire. Chilling, as it should be.

A Knight's Tale: "Nature Boy" PG, Chaucer/Wat. This makes me so happy. It's perfect, perfect slash in an adorable way!

Muppets: "If You Can't Say Anything Nice" I can't resist the cuteness of this fic about why Statler and Waldorf are at the show every night.

Nancy Drew: "Worth A Try" G. Bess POV. Bess is feeling a little tired of "this whole 'Sleuthing with Nancy' thing." It's really fantastic to see a realistic look through a sidekick's eyes.

Neil Gaiman- American Gods: "How Spider Came to America"PG-13. An Anansi story that reads true. A bit unsettling and a bit charming.

Neil Gaiman- Neverwhere: "If You'd Been Listening" PG-13. I'm not even sure what to say about this story. It's a deep, dark look at London
Below and events after the story ends. In parts it's hilarious, touching, exciting, and distubing. There are several unexpected twists and sudden turns in the story that bother me, but the language, tone, and imagination of it is so fantastic, that I must ask people to read it. It's quite an accomplishment. My favorite quote: Perched on the table between Door and Richard was a rather large and self-satisfied pigeon. Until recently, the pigeon had been a flamboyant
gentleman by the name of the Marquis de Carabas. He had declined to reveal the circumstances that had left him in his current state, and Richard had his suspicions that it was a deliberate attempt to infiltrate the society of birds.

"The Seven Habits of Highly Effective (If Somewhat Unnecessarily Violent) Assassins" R. Brilliant Croup and Vandemar fic. Quote: 'Suffering is an unfortunate and unpleasant part of our job. Ours is a difficult, thankless life.'

Jeeves and Wooster: "Jeeves and the Accidental Engagement" PG-13, Jeeves/Wooster. This is utterly delightful and Wodehousian. Plus, the slash.
Quote: But, nevertheless, something seemed rather off, and I don't mean like how the cheese and milk goes off during Jeeves' annual vacation and I spend two weeks wondering why my rooms smell like the cattle fields surrounding Totleigh-on-the-Wold until Jeeves returns and removes the spoiled goods.

"Yes, Sir, Jeeves" NC-17, Jeeves/ Wooster. You know when you read a fic and it just makes you all shivery and liquid feeling inside? This is that story. Role-reversal! Slow acknowledgment of feelings! Comedy! Bertie calling Jeeves 'Sir'!!!!!!! OMG. SO HAWT. READ NOW. Ok, deep breath. This is what I wanted when I first went looking for J/W slash. I can't read the rest of the J&W fic right now. I'll have to come back when I've caught my breath.
