Let's call this the year-end rec dump. It's all the recs I have saved up that I've been meaning to post since, oh, about April. Some of these have been waiting for their own posts, some waiting for me to read more, some just waiting for me to actually put them together. There really should be something here for everyone. Fandoms are in no particular order.
Highlander:
Fruitcake by
iferion(DM/M, PG-13) - Lovely Christmas/Holiday seasonal piece. Methos, Duncan, food, magic, rituals, and traditions. Gorgeous and perfect for the season.
Crouching Stargate, Drunken Yak by
amanda-r (G) - Hilarious, brilliant fic! Drunken immortals, pop culture, horrible swordfights. (Not a crossover with any Stargate franchise. In case you were confused.)
RPF:
This…is BNN by
scrunchy (PG) - BNN stands for bisexual news network. Now don’t you want to read the story? What about if I tell you it features Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Anderson Cooper, and Keith Olbermann having dinner together and talking about sex? Look, in my opinion any story that features Anderson Cooper with ambiguous sexuality is an automatic read.
Pride and Prejudice:
One Has All the Goodness (G) - Darcy’s POV while he is in London forcing Wickham to marry Lydia. Nicely done. I really wanted more of this.
Sarah’s Story by StacyB (G) - Nice story about Lizzie and Darcy's marriage from the point of view of her ladies' maid. Really well done.
The Theater in May by mariafaith (Darcy/Elizabeth, G) - Satisfying "what-if" scenario. Requires a little suspension of disbelief, but really enjoyable.
Lord Peter Wimsey:
Overmastered by
ninevah_uk (Harriet/Peter, R) - Kinky roleplaying. Harriet dresses up as Bunter. It's a combination of scary and brilliant, and only makes you want to use the mild brain-bleach. It damn sure made me blush. But now, strangely, I want more.
The Fellow in the Fellows Garden by
azdak - 29,000 word story, reads like an additional mystery added to canon. Peter, in 1955, Harriet isn’t in this one.
Iron Man:
Snips and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails by
hackthis (PG) - Tony turns into a dog. No, really. Too much awesome.
“And Innocently Sideways, the Way We Always Fall” by
splash_the_cat (Pepper/Tony, PG-13) - Really nice Tony/Pepper interaction, one year post-movie.
Benefit Limitation Agreement by
quigonejinn (Tony/Pepper, G) - Brilliant structure. So funny.
"The Kids Aren't All Right" by Christine Everhart (vanityfair.com) by
samdonne (G) - I
recced this like mad over at my regular LJ, and I think it’s been recced everywhere recs are possible, but if you have somehow missed it up till now, please do yourself a favor and read this fic.
A Small and 100% Innocent Token of Gratitude by
svilleficrecs (Tony/Pepper, NC-17) - My notes say: “AMAZING story. BEST EVER.” So I guess I really liked it and it’s totally worth it. I'm almost afraid to reread it in case it isn't quite that awesome. But I think it really is.
Pirates of the Caribbean:
In Civilized Parts by
penknife(Jack/OMC, R) - Absolutely amazing story about young Jack finding his own moral code.
Jeeves and Wooster
Jeeves and the Snapshot by
weaselwoman13 (Jeeves/Wooster, PGish) -Wonderful J/W first time. Great voice.
Batman: The Dark Knight:
Origin Story by
minim-calibre - Nicely done. I’m not a DC comics reader, so I’m sure this doesn’t have quite the impact for me it does for others, but this is a nice look at Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, fitting in with TDK.
Doctor Who
Better with Four by
goldy-dollar -AU from Journey’s End, the two doctors, Rose and Donna travel together. A lovely alternate possibility.
Think of Mars by
greeneyedgirl42 (Ten/Rose, Donna, Jack, R) - Hilarious. The Doctor starts hallucinating sexy images of Rose, and Donna has some suggestions for how to deal.
The Sums of Things by
shinyopals (Doctor/Rose, PG-13, spoilers for S4) - Fantastic, plotty story set after Journey's End. Touching, funny, scary, engrossing, wonderful!
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang:
Noir Enough by
thefourthvine (Harry/Perry, R) Brilliant, hilarious, perfect, sexy.
Trials by veracious (Harry/Perry, PG-13) A kiss. Cute.
The Other Line by thegiddygeek (Harry/Perry, R) Drunken goodness.
The Case of the Gay Shirt by basingstoke (Harry, Perry, gen) Harry goes undercover in a Gay Shirt. Wonderfully written, feels just like the movie.
Boom Boom by basingstoke - (Harry/Perry/Harmony, NC-17) Threesome, hot and funny. 998 words.
Crossovers:
Highlander/Torchwood or Highlander/Doctor Who
Gone Fishin’ by
jinxed_wood (Highlander/Torchwood crossover, G) - A really humorous crossover, more than a little cracky, but it does say Torchwood up there, right? Featuring Duncan, Methos, Richie, Jack, Ianto, and Gwen.
Vinculum by
starcrossedgirl (Highlander/Doctor Who, Methos/Ten, NC-17) - I have some issues with the Doctor's characterization, and the fact that any mention of Rose that couldn't be construed as a vague put-down is missing. Methos is great, though, and the story itself, the sex, and particularly how well it fits into Highlander canon sell this for me. Also, it keeps my hard-core Methos/Duncan shipper satisfied. My Doctor/Rose shipper is a left a little out in the cold.
Discworld/Lord of the Rings
Apples by
20thcenturyvole (G) - How Death got his horse. Brilliant.
Discworld/Doctor Who
Guess Who’s Coming to Tea by
jinxed_wood (G) - Havelock Vetinari meets the Tenth Doctor.
Discworld/Firefly
Can’t Stop the Turtle by
uarazy2 (G) - First of all, someone pulled off a Discworld/Firefly crossover. Props for that. The crew of Serenity visits a world on the back of four elephants, on the back of a turtle. I would have loved to see lots more of this. (My only quibble had to do with the reproductive anatomy of turtles, being a subject I have some personal knowledge about.)
Discworld/Torchwood
Death and Definitely-Not-A-Maiden by anonymous? (Jack Harkness, Death, PG-13) Wonderful, amazing. MADE OF WIN!
Torchwood/Pirates of the Carribean
Two Immortals Walk Into a Bar … by anonymous? (Jack Harkness/Jack Sparrow, PG-13) Well done. This is a meeting that's hard to resist.
Torchwood/Lord Peter Wimsey
All The Young Soldiers (
and part 2) by
m_j_ (Jack Harkness/Peter Wimsey, Wimsey/Bunter, Jack/Ianto, R) - Really excellent and well done. I love crossovers of fandoms you think could never work that do.
