Vermeer, Children's Books and Pakistan

Check out my new backpack and kicks! :D

(They just happen to match) I've been searching everywhere for both of them for a good 2 months and miraculously found them in Shibuya within 30 minutes! The bag was ¥2900 at Daichu and the Converse were ¥4500 at a cheap shoe store! This was the 12th store I visited and I finally found my size! Yay for accomplished shopping!

I spent a tranquil Saturday in Ueno visiting art galleries and libraries. I went to see the Vermeer exhibit which I was really excited about (since the Netherlands section was under construction when I visited the Louvre this winter). I was pretty miffed off by the HUUUGE CROWD of old Japanese people and couples, which made it difficult to examine the paintings up close for long periods of time. And they didn't have Girl With a Pearl Earring, The Art of Painting or The Milkmaid and the exhibit was rather short, so that was a little disappointing. But regardless I got to see lots of Delft landscapes, as well as the Street in Delft up close (one of my favorites after reading Girl With a Pearl Earring).

Afterward, I went to the National Children's Library right by the Ueno Zoo. They were holding a free exhibit of the best children's books imported from the Czech Republic. I ended up staying a while browsing the permanent collection of children's books from all over the world.

Then, as I was walking back toward the station, there was a Pakistani Culture Festival going on by the fountain and there were several tents lined up with vendors selling Tandori chicken, naan, and amazing roasted turkeys. There were a few merchants selling carpets, clothes and such, while three musicians played flute, drums and guitar performing amaaazing traditional Pakistani music - I fell in love.

I am most definitely going to backpack in Pakistan one day.
