I am back in the library folks!
Las Vegas is proving to be rather rainy and cloudy which is extremely rare but I'm not complaining. This place could do with a little more of that H2O. So what have I been doing lately other than grieving over the end of Harry Potter? Hmm, a lot of DVDs. We went to Blockbuster last week and rented 8 videos. So far, I've seen "Fight Club", "V for Vendetta", "The Queen", "Dream Girls", "To Kill A Mockingbird" (my hadn't seen it and I wanted to watch it again), and "Guys and Dolls". We've still got "Capote" and "Songs and Lyrics" to watch. I'm gonna try to skip the latter. Unfortunately my mother adores Hugh Grant... D:
Omg if you want to see excellent acting, "The Queen" has it all. I simply revere that film! Not only Helen Mirren's incredible impersonation of the queen (it goes beyond impersonation. She's studied her mannerisms and subtle gestures intently, but she's gone beyond that to express the side of her that's never been exposed to the public. She's fantastic and her Oscar was well deserved.) but the general cinematography and tremendous attention to detail just blew me away. Stunning.
"Fight Club" was superb as well, but only as a piece of art. I think it fulfills its purpose as a film with, again, fabulous acting (Helena Bonham Carter is Hera of Hollywood) and awesome art choreography (though I thought the music could've been selected or arranged better); however, I think its audience is limited. For example, my mom couldn't appreciate it because all she could recall was the excessive violence and gore, and I think this applies to most film watchers - it's really a pity. Whether it's the quantity of films that exist in our generation, I think people now have a reduced understanding of all the aspects that create a great movie and I point the finger directly at chick flicks. I dunno, maybe it's just that that's what films have become nowadays... it's awfully disappointing.
"Dream Girls" kinda fits into what I was talking about. The soundtrack is amazing, duh, but that's really all I feel there is to it. The story was rather cheesy and, if I may say so, quite hypocritical seeing they cast Beyonce beside Jennifer Hudson. Perhaps I'm just picky, but I think what makes an exceptional movie is the balance in all aspects ranging from lighting, camera angles, all the way to plot twists.
Although I don't think it's a five star film, I really liked "V for Vendetta" and that's probably something to do with my infatuation with masks. Natalie Portman was unbelievable and I think she's taken some large leaps as an actress to shave her head on screen. The thought of not being able to re-shoot would be horrifying. I do like the soundtrack and I'm going to Borders afterwards to purchase it. One thing that bothered me was the thought that Hugo Weaving was under the mask. His voice is fantastic... but I just picture someone like Stuart Townsend. mmeh.
Right, other than watching DVDs, I just talked with Natalie on the phone again, the first time after we finished book 7 and you can imagine what we shrieked over. Poor Natalie also hasn't anyone to discuss the book with because her Dad's reading the book on his business trip and her mom is absorbing the book meticulously, and by that I mean she's reading each chapter three times before going on to the next. It's killing Nat. I love her mom. My mom says she's saving it for the flight back to Japan but I want her to start cracking now so that I can at least discuss the first few chapters.
Ooh yesterday I went to Walmart (YES!) and bought this pair of pants - brown plaid boot cuts! :D I'd been searching everywhere for 2 years now for an affordable pair that fit. I also got a simple black babydoll dress which I hope I can wear for some casual evening at SUA. Cheep shopping gets me giddy. :3
You know what else? All these Harry Potter icons that've been popping out since the release of the book! I love them, but I'm debating whether to use them because I don't want to spoil anyone yet. Meh, I'm usin em.
cinema,
