First off, a bit of normal non-live updates *gasp shock*...
A couple weeks ago my server starting crashing regularly. I couldn't really tell what it was, but I figured "Hm, maybe if I do an update it'll fix." So I started letting dselect do its thing, and it didn't seem to be helping. In fact, apt was seg faulting almost every single time, before it could even finish the pre-processing. At some point, I ran 'top', and even though there wasn't a single process taking up more than 0.2% CPU, the top looked like this:
top - 21:35:32 up 1 day, 1:03, 2 users, load average: 162.43, 133.28, 81.35
Tasks: 324 total, 5 running, 313 sleeping, 1 stopped, 5 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.2%us, 11.4%sy, 0.0%ni, 0.0%id, 87.5%wa, 0.6%ni, 0.3%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 1556488k total, 1523940k used, 32548k free, 9468k buffers
Swap: 2972016k total, 2497172k used, 474844k free, 10044k cached
Now, for those non-hardcore UNIX nerds, lemme break down a couple things that mean something is Very Bad. That
load average of 162? Means that in the last minute, an average of 162 processes were waiting for the processor at any time (ideally, you'd want that as low as possible- right now my computer's at 0.01). The 87.5%wa? Means that 87.5% of the CPU time is being spent waiting for I/O (disk activity) to finish (right now? 0.3%).
So I checked around a bit more, & found some
SMART errors on my main root-partition drive. OK, fine, it's the oldest drive in there, I'll replace it. So I go out & get a new drive. Put it in, copy everything over, reboot, fine. Wait- got a crash, ok, maybe something's wonky- but it's fine now... whatever, I'll deal with it more tomorrow.
Next morning? It's crashed again. -_-;
By this point I'm like "OK seriously, what the F?" So I boot into memtest mode and let it check the RAM while I shower. It's says it's almost finished (after nearly a couple hours (I got up extra early that day)), but it's STILL going, and I realize that last test takes AGES, so I end up leaving for work, w/ my computer stuck in memtest mode (which means my server's down all day -_-;). Come back, no memory errors. So I'm messing around more w/ reinstalling, copying everything over, updating a couple necessary files, & rebooting, but it's still crashing. OK, fine- maybe I'll just reinstall on the new drive & THEN copy the old stuff over. It takes ages to copy. And hey! Segfaults during COPY! By this time, I'm booting from the freakin' rescue/installer disc, and I'm STILL getting
seg faults. So this time I KNOW it's not software-related. So I grab the Ultimate Boot CD to try some CPU checkers. They don't seem to get very far. OK, fine- my CPU is toast. Which I suppose is understandable, considering I got it in what, 2003? 2004? *checks* Feb 2003. So I need a new one.
The snag? My old AMD Athlon 1800+ was a
Socket A. Which they don't make anymore. Which means if I'm gonna buy a new CPU, I need a new motherboard to go with it.
Oh, and guess what else? My old RAM (which I'd just confirmed was still fine)? 184-pin DIMM SDRAM. The
new motherboard (which was the cheapest CPU/mobo combo)? 240-pin DDR2.
So I had to get a new CPU, motherboard, AND RAM. And I'd already gotten a new drive. And, as luck would have it, I replaced the old, failing IDE drive with another IDE drive, even though IDE is slowly phasing out and most drives are SATA now, because my old mobo only had a couple SATA slots, but 2 IDE channels (supporting 4 drives). The new one? 1 slot, 2 drives. Which means I can either have both hard drives in at once, or 1 drive & the DVD-RW drive. T_T; So I plug in the new IDE drive and the DVD-RW, leaving the other IDE drive off (half of my RAIDed /home partition). Reformat & install onto the new drive (since it crashed so many times before), & copy everything back over. Shit's not working. GAR. It doesn't like copying all my old shit over the new install. OK, FINE- I'll re-install from scratch on the new drive, and then just FIGURE OUT what packages I had installed (which shouldn't be too hard) on the old drive, & manually update whatever few config files need to be copied back over. Hey, that way I can get rid of a ton of crap I don't really need anymore, since I'm ONLY using it as a server nowadays, so I don't need X or any of the other desktop stuff on there.
I FINALLY get everything up & running, which goes surprisingly fast (except for a couple things which need extra configuration, like my crappy web photo gallery & DVD inventory thingies, which were a bit tricky to do because it involved copying databases back over (thank Science all the Sybase (spfc) stuff was on /home!)...
BUT? One of the drives (/mnt/bigdisk) now fails to show up. No mount, no /dev entry, nothing under /proc, nothing even in the BIOS. You've GOT to be fucking kidding me. A 400G SATA (so it's fairly new- as in, I got it in Japan in the last 3 years) drive, is now completely shot. MAYBE the data's still there, but w/ it not showing up, that means there's a problem w/ the controller, and if I really wanted to fix it, I'd have to find another IDENTICAL drive (down to the exact model, revision, possibly even BATCH), and swap the boards out (thus rendering THAT drive useless). And considering that was basically my TV/movies drive? Fuckit. I'll just re-download it all.
So- I bought a new drive, CPU, motherboard & RAM (which meant blowing ~$300), and at the same time lost another drive, and can no longer use my DVD drive.
I. Fucking. Hate. Computers.
But on the upside, my computer is slightly faster, and a LOT quieter. I think the CPU fan was the loudest thing in the last one. And the new one is damn near silent in comparison. So now the loudest thing in here is the external fan on my laptop cooler. -_-;
Anyway, let's move onto something else...
Jun was in town yesterday, so we went to Kua'Aina for lunch. Mmmm, burrrrgerrrr. Of course, Girl decided on the way over there that we should go to
Pierre Hermé for dessert, since it's "right there". And of course, when dessert is involved & there's 2 girls, I'm outnumbered, despite not really needing it (or wanting to spend more on dessert than lunch itself). But whatever- we got inside & everything looked good... REALLY good- so I got a little excited, which of course, delighted Girl to no end. So I ordered this coconut iced chocolate drink & this really good-looking chocolate dessert, Girl gets a raspberry chocolate drink w/ a chocolate/caramel dessert (even though she'd been leaning toward the lemon tart before the cake tray came out for us to look & point at), & we each get a rose macaron- Jun got a hot chocolate drink & a couple macarons. Which was probably a smart move. 'Cause although the drink was pretty good, and the first bite of my dessert was like OMFG THIS IS SOOO FUCKING GOOD- by about halfway through each, and then having to eat about 1/3 of Girl's dessert, the bottom half of which is like thick-ass solid ganache... and Jun's drink is SUPER strong & bitter dark & thick & reminds both of us (me & Jun) of coffee (it was more like chocolate SAUCE than a drink- it would've been much more drinkable w/ about 2-3 cups of milk added) & she ends up switching w/ Girl... and GAAAAH by the time we were done (not even finishing the dark, bitter drink of death) I seriously wanted to puke. I felt sick the entire walk back to the station, train ride home, and then got home and GOT sick (although Girl swears that was from the burger). -_-; Next time? We SPLIT a single dessert, and NO chocolate drinks. Or get fruit tarts or something. But FUCK- I don't think I want to even look at chocolate for at least another month or two.
edit: Girl INSISTS that I clear PH's name by pointing I should point out that the tart (which Girl got last time she went (this was my first)) was FABULOUS, and that we I would've been FINE if she hadn't gotten her chocolate overdose of death (and forced me to help her finish it). :P"
OK, onto the good part- J!
Headed to Quattro a bit early today to check out goods, sorta hoping there wouldn't be anything that great (trying to save money & all), and the token expensive item this time was an afghan shawl for like ¥8800- um, no. BUT- they had an Eco-bag (cloth bag for grocery shopping) that had "CHAMPAGNE GOLD SUPER MARKET", with a little freakin' shopping cart icon, and, of course, "WAKE UP! MOTHER FUCKERⒿ". AND? WUMF "my chopsticks" (マイ箸), in their own little cloth WUMF carry case! And little portable ashtrays... like a little eco-theme or something. Girl got
the shopping bag, a pair of chopsticks, plus an extra pair for Evon, & the usual vinyl bag, muffler towel & wristband (and will probably be getting more chopsticks tomorrow to give people >_<;). The t-shirts weren't that interesting, and since they said "Trial 01", I'm sure there'll be different ones for the shows in November & December. I got the chopsticks, & I'll probably break down & get the shopping bag tomorrow, too, 'cause they'll probably have all new stuff next month. I'm still holding out for a WUMF wallet, science damnit (and I've been writing that on every freakin' survey for the last, like, year, too -_-;)!
Anyway- onto the show... the CGSM bag made Girl & Lillian start getting all excited about the prospect of getting to actually hear CGSM (which he played at the
Match Up show), until I pointed out that, during the 5 Days, they had a "CRUSH" t-shirt, but never played THAT. So that was that. I was just hoping the set wouldn't be the same as
the last half-dozen or so shows... and I was pleasantly surprised! At least for the first half. :P"

HAHA on J fucking up the words at the beginning of Final Call & having to start over. And HELLS yeah on 2 Glaring Sun songs (other than 'break', which has been played semi-often), and a NEW SONG? Without even so much as a mention (other than some banter after the break about how they've written new stuff)? Shit, usually they make a big deal out of new songs (and even generally say the TITLE), but this time? Nothin'. Couldn't make out the words, & the two choruses were different- the first one sounded like "super sigh" & the second like "wait for sound"- I'm sure those are way off, but hey- not only did I have to deal w/ J's pronunciation on a new/unknown song, but the shitty-ass sound quality of Quattro. And even though the vocals were WAY too reverb-y on MOST of the set, you could barely make ANYTHING out on that song. GAR. Will have to try & listen again later... But let's hope J continues in the mixing up of the setlist, and w/ the modifications of existing songs (much as I like most of the songs he plays nearly every time, hearing the same song played the exact same way 10, 20, going on 30 times now, DOES start to get a little old... -_-;).
Oh, and the pre-show music? Was Pretty Polly by Queen Adreena, which was on the Sugizo "Parallel Side of Soundtrack" (although possibly a different mix/recording)... first time I've ever heard anything related (albeit remotely) to another Luna Sea member used as any member's pre-/post-show music...
...this music is making me wanna replay Ocarina again >_<; But speaking of games- I've finished Secret Agent Clank as well as the R&C Future- Quest for Booty download... both were amusing (SAC had a few more funny moments, I think- like the robot poker game w/ the trivia questions like "Solve this partial differential equation" (shows a chalkboard full of math), to which the answer is "3 toasters per furlong", or the "What color drapes go with this couch?" w/ a little outline drawing, to which the correct answer is "I'll go with whatever you decide" >_<;) But overall, I don't think either was all that strong. Granted, one was a PSP game, & one was a short-ass download, but still- even Size Matters (PSP) was better, I think mainly due to the fact that it was actually a Rachet AND Clank game, not a Clank game with Ratchet-only side games (SAC), or a Ratchet-only game (like QFB, or even Deadlocked). Although the Qwark bio "missions" were pretty amusing- especially the opera one (although that wasn't nearly as funny as
THIS! >_<;)
OK, it's late (I didn't count on spending over 2 hours on the computer & dessert parts -_-;). And my sinuses are completely stuffed up & I'm all sneezy, which is irritating as fuck. Work, you stupid allergy pills! You've been doing so well until today... -_-;
