Feels like ComicCon but for fanfic melungea March 22 2011, 17:18:32 UTC
I feel like I just read an incredible piece by a giant of fanfic and then read the heartfelt response to that piece by another giant of fanfic. It's sitting in the front row at the Firefly panel at ComicCon and seeing Leonard Nimoy walk up to the question mic to tell Joss Whedon how much he loves his work. Squee! Given that SweetJaimieLee provided an expertly written synopsis to your beutifully written fic, all I can really say is that this made my day. Thank you both for being such incredible writers of this fandom. I should provide some kind of feedback in my comment so I offer this.

I thoroughly enjoy watching The Good Wife. It's entertaining and I never feel as though I have to watch it through the lens of my own hopes or wishes for the characters. The screenwriters do so well at creating realistic developments that I'm actually very eager to just let go and follow along. I love that the characters aren't clinging to heterosexist tropes demeaning friendships because it's accepted ratings-seeking behavior for a procedural. The handling of the Olivia/Alex subtext or the abortive coming out of the Serena character within the L&O franchise was maddening. I don't mean to suggest that in order for The Good Wife to maintain its integrity that Alicia has to be queer and fall in love with Kalinda; however, I do believe that the the writers have created a situation where it is within the realm of possibility and as such it deserves the same respect that would be given to any other storyline. I love that the writers haven't wimped out and eliminated it ... yet.

Nevertheless, after I watch an episode of The Good Wife, I do wish for more. I wish I could see the tender friendship between Kalinda and Alicia develop into something sweet and romantic. That's what I get when I read your fics. I don't feel as though I've stepped away from the show to observe an alternate universe. The way you both (Threeguesses and SweetJamieLee) attend the craft of writing goes beyond the rigid expectations of canon and yet it doesn't leap into the reimagination of plot development for the purpose of forcing two characters into previously unexplored and implausible situations.

You delve into the evolution of these characters as they already are transforming them into the more fully formed people they could just as likely become on the show. You never just rely on what's already established, you venture beyond that and help the characters grow in such a genuine and honest way that it seems as though you are in perfect sync with the screenwriters. Fangirl moment, I absolutely wish yo were members of the writing team over at CBS. They'd be very lucky to have the two of you. Of course, I'd miss your fanfic terribly as it is so achingly lovely reading your work. Thank you so much for writing. I endeavor one day to develop such phenomenal instincts for recognizing the nuances of plot and character development and communicating fine detail through subtlety.

Wow, just- thank you. Being compared to Leonard Nimoy/Joss Whedon is seriously one of the most flattering things that has ever happened to me lol. Hands down. Very, very happy you liked the fic.

As for The Good Wife avoiding heterosexist tropes: YES. I was so pleased to find a network show that got it so right. (Unlike, say, L&O. Oh god, I don't even want to remember that whole "is this because I'm a lesbian?" debacle.) Kalinda's queer-conquests are, for the most part, not cheap ratings grabs, which is lovely.

And sweetjamielee has seriously written the flagship fic for this pairing, no doubt about it. I owe her my firstborn child/heart/spleen/porn in repayment. :) Alas though, CBS would have to become a cable channel before we could be writers there (that, or broadcasting standards would have to become waaaaaay less stringent).

I am so glad the fic feels as though it could be in the same universe as canon - it's always hard to achieve that when you're writing such a non-canon pairing. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. &hearts
