The French Revolution, sure! Instead of trying to make this even remotely historically accurate, I'm just going with race-blind casting of the likes of which hasn't been since Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (WHICH IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER, please and thank you). Kalinda is definitely one of the proletariat--fuck, maybe a maid? god, history sucks, I'm making her a blacksmith in Peter's stables--and Alicia is an aristocrat. The fic starts when the Reign of Terror kicks off, and Peter pays Kalinda to get Alicia and the kids out of the country. Actually, come to think of, this would probably be a pretty sad story--Peter at the very least would be arrested and guillotined as an enemy of the revolution. Oooh, but maybe Diane and Will could be members of parliament in La Montagne or the Committee of Public Safety? And Will's all, kill them all, off with their heads but Diane is like, maybe we should, you know, spare the children.

BUT THAT'S GETTING OFF TRACK. In any case, the whole story would be the flight, first in a carriage but eventually on foot as the roads get more dangerous, and Alicia has to like, tear strips off her giant floofy dress to bind Zac's foot wound (the kids are little, because babies are fun and I can), and eventually they fall in love and Kalinda stops seeing Alicia as a symbol of oppression and opulent wealth and comes to love her for the woman she is. JUST LIKE ON THE SHOW.

Does it even need to be race-blind though? Britain was trading with India since the 1590's and there was a French East India company and parts of India under French rule in the 18th century. It was just less successful than the Dutch or British ones.

So we can do a character assassination on Peter and have him involved in trade, in I dunno textiles, and bringing Kalinda back as spoils. OR instead of the name change she's a member of Indian aristocracy looking to escape the constraints of what's expected of her by family and exchanges sleeping with him for passage to France. Either way the K/P sex happens as something Alicia needs to forgive.

Maybe she's part of Peter's household as part of his business trade, or she's Zach and Grace's tutor in Urdu so they can grow up and keep exploiting the colonies for profit.

Bizarrely enough the French Court in exile ended up in Latvia of all places (where my father's family is from) so perhaps instead of drifting around Europe with the court and attempting to restore the monarchy Alicia and Kalinda could end up in a modest neo-classical manor house with lots of pine forests and spend their time picking mushooms and taking saunas.

Also seduction scenes with all those clothes to take off.
