Ok, so I'm a few years behind the rest of the world... AGAIN!
The other day a good friend of mine posted a video of a version of "The Cup Song"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UL3VEiR9rg It got my attention at least partly because it's just the kind of music I like singing, but also because the cup clap beat thing was something I'd not seen before.
I'm not a big fan of the current rash of teen movies an so "Pitch Perfect" had completely passed me by, but when the same friend posted this a few days later...
http://www.wimp.com/irishcups/ It got me looking up the how and the where of it.
The initial origin is from the movie "Pitch Perfect" and is performed by Anna Kendrick
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aSCUZ25OjY But there's a lot more to this than just a neat bit of fluff from a teen movie.
The song it'self is much older...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmXSOPDe5-Y and I have no doubt that the "Cup Game" is just a variety of "Claping Game" of the sort that appears in playgrounds and school yards around the world.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvDpzzl1uqA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXMooKiYKi0 It's probably older than the song though my very quick and rough research hasn't turned up anything about it before this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLXYRGSTKIk There are other versions too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZ3oVGs3br8 and a lot of tutorials available but this is possibly the best one that I've found so far...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhJUAGWQHUU Incase you wanted the lyrics...
Here's a start, but it's not QUITE the same as the original.
