Dawn of the Eighth Day [open commentlog]

[Link is lying in the hallway of deck 07, just a few yards down from the aft stairwell. Blood has soaked his tunic on his left side and a pool is starting to collect underneath him and soak into the carpet. There is no rip in his tunic to indicate he was recently attacked ( Read more... )

[There are several things Kevas might expect to come across during his walks around the ship. This is not one of them. The sight nearly causes him to drop his rum.]

Liddle mon!

[He kneels down beside Link and checks the kid's pulse. Still alive, but he's doing well at all. The kid probably won't last much longer. No one way he can treat this. In fact he knows only one who might though he loathes to admit it.

No choice though, he's going to have to take Link to the infirmary. Kevas chugs the rest of his room and tossed the bottle to the floor. He scoops Link's small body into his arms and sprints up the stairs.]

Hang on liddle mon. Joo gonna be fine. Just hang on.

[O hi, AMU is waiting in the infirmary whenever you get there~]

[When Kevas touches him he suddenly cries out, a high-pitched primitive noise of a very afraid, very much in pain little boy. As he's scooped up, he slumps against him, face pressed against Kevas' chest, and the movement of every step makes a wave of agony pass through him. It's paralyzing, and all he can do is lay in his arms limply and keep breathing.

Kevas might notice the sickening smell of rot now that Link's off his stomach and the source of the blood is exposed to the air. It's like the smell of Carnival - or Shayn's dead bears and hexes.]

[Oh he notices it. That giant nose isn't just there for show. This isn't good. When did he get hexed. More importantly, why didn't he tell anyone? Was the fool trying to get himself killed?

No time to think about it now. He'll berate the kid once he's better. Right now getting him help is the most important thing.

Kevas charges into the infirmary, tightly holding Link's limp form.]

Help him!

[It's a demand, not a request.]

[Kevas' temper made no difference to AMU, it would perform its job duties with precisely the same alacrity regardless.]

Place the patient on the table please.

[It gestures to an examination table. Lenses scan Link's prone form for signs of the problem.

Oooh. AMU might have to clone some brand-new organs. Fun!!]

[Link is still conscious for now, but just barely. The excessively clean, sterile smell of the infirmary is all too familiar. In the back of hims mind behind the veil of pain, there's just a little bit of renewed hope.

Unfortunately, the hex has had a heavy toll on his juvenile body. Under his tunic, a hole has opened up. The skin, fat and muscle guarding his organs rotted away, the curse has begun to consume his insides, starting with his liver and small intestines. The organs are oozing blood at a rapid rate as they're being assaulted.]

[Kevas carefully sets Link down on the table trying to spare him anymore pain. He looks on with worry. There's nothing he can do now but hope for the kid's survival. Though, with this monster being his only chance at living, Kevas isn't too sure his chances are all that high.]

Just hang on liddle mon. Joo gonna make it t'roo dis. We ain't gonna letchu die.

[Even if Link would come back the next day, the kid doesn't deserve to be put through this much pain.]

I must cut away the infected tissue.

[There may be a bit of reluctance in AMU's tone for the next bit, or is that your imagination? Mechanical hands and built-in scalpels begin to clear the area of fabric and other contaminants.]

I am obliged to offer pain management for an operation of this magnitude. As the patient is unable to speak for himself, would you like to request on his behalf?

[AMU's words seem to wake him up, although it's not clear whether it's the looming possibility of "an operation of this magnitude" or the mention of painkillers. One eye opens a crack, but the lights above are too great, and pain forces it shut again.

Yes, whatever drugs the robot wants to use. Just give it. As soon as possible. But Link can't speak, and only focuses on continuing his slow, ragged breathing, which makes his lungs burn as if they were about to pop like a swollen balloon.]

[Kevas looks at AMU in a mixture of confusion and disgust.]

What kind of question be dat?! Yes! Whatevah be helpin'! Just do sometin' dammit!

[This stupid machine is wasting time they don't have asking stupid questions. There's no telling how much time Link has left.]

[Truth be told, AMU didn't want to ask, but Kevas probably wouldn't have liked those results either. With a whine of servos that could be interpreted as an exasperated sigh, the robot doses Link with a general anesthetic.

Goodnight, Link.

While that kicks in, AMU gives him an oxygen mask and prepares an aggressive antibiotic. Link's organs are visibly deteriorating, but AMU will not be defeated by some "hex." The thick liquid it pours on the wound is mostly clear with a faint yellow tinge; it puts a stop to the rapid progression of rot.

AMU will still have to cut the dead and dying flesh away to prevent further damage, but for now, Link has time.]
