I had to have one of my great big old trees taken down over the weekend, a giant cedar elm who was slowly falling across the street towards the school next to where I live.
I would have preferred to leave it, but can't afford a lawsuit, or the guilt I would have if it had hurt someone when it would inevitably upend. I had prayed a lot for that tree when everyone told me it would have to come down a few years ago, and ironically, this year it was fully foliated and looked healthy as can be. But the weight of all the leaves and the lack of branches on one side caused the roots to start pulling up out of the ground. I watched it lean more every day over the past week.
When the guys came to hack away at it, I sat in my window and cried as I watched them pull it down with a crash.
I don't like this year very much so far.
