Title: The Daddy Chronicles
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Summary: Danny loves being a father. He truly does.
Disclaimer: Yeah, we know who the mother of his baby would be if I owned the show. Oh, fine. I'll SHARE with Lindsay.
Danny woke up to a deep sense of foreboding. Something was very wrong, and somehow he knew it wasn’t going to turn out well for him. His eyes took a few minutes to adjust to the light shining through the window before widening in disbelief. Acid churned viciously in his stomach at the sight and he groaned.
“I’m too old for this,” he muttered.
The entire living area looked like a disaster, and his head was going to be served on a platter. It was as if a giant fingerprint powder bomb had been detonated, and there was only one person who could be responsible for it.
“Aidan Monroe Messer!” he called out as he sat up on the couch. Running his hands over his face, he tried to wipe the remnants of sleep away. He’d been working long hours at the lab on a high-profile case. While he still loved his job, he hated the way it took him away from his family, although right now, he was torn between being amused and annoyed with his four-year-old son.
The pitter patter of little feet scurried across the hardwood floor. Aidan somehow managed to skid to a halt right in front of him despite wearing socks. Then, the boy pointed at him and covered his giggles with his hand.
“Daddy’s printed!”
Belatedly, Danny stared at his hands and realised he’d been dusted too. “Kiddo, didn’t we talk about fingerprint powder?”
“But Daddy, I’m the fingerprint police! I even have a badge, see?”
Indeed he saw - the bright shiny badge pinned against Aidan’s red T-shirt, a replica of the one he and Lindsay had.
“Yes, you are, but aren’t you off duty with me today?”
Danny tried hard to suppress the note of pleading in his voice. As his wife had repeatedly told him, children sensed fear, and their son was more astute than most. Clearly, this ability came from HER side of the family.
Aidan quirked his head, and stared at him. He wondered how the kid had inherited his mom’s ability to make him feel stupid.
“But Daddy, Uncle Don said I could have more powder! And I could help by getting all the fingerprints in the house!”
Traitor, he thought. Don was apparently still upset about having babysat several nights ago. It wasn’t as if Danny had planned any of this. Aidan just had an incredible knack of getting into trouble. Even Mac seemed to pale whenever Danny or Lindsay asked him to help out on their night off. So when he and Lindsay stopped finding suckers people to help them babysit, they came up with the ultimate master plan. Aidan would come around for a visit, and he would be so precocious and well-behaved, asking his Uncle Mac, Uncle Don, Uncle Sheldon, or Auntie Stella to come play with him that night. The kid had even perfected a lisp to add to his adorableness potency.
“Will you come pway wif me?” he would ask, all blinking big blue eyes, chubby cheeks, and dark wavy hair.
None of them stood a chance.
Including poor “I’m a macho man” Don, who had practically crawled out of their apartment crying for mercy four nights ago. While Danny had sympathised, Lindsay had apologized repeatedly for the unknown substance stuck in the poor cop’s hair. She had also reassured Don the next day that the nearly-bald look suited him. It would’ve helped had Lindsay kept a straight face, and Stella not nearly injured herself with laughter. He should've remembered how upset the other man had been.
At Danny’s sigh, Aidan came up to his legs, and looked right up at him.
“Is Daddy mad?”
He wasn’t going to turn into a puddle of goo just because his son used those baby blue-eyes on him - his eyes, as Lindsay frequently reminded him.
“No, but your mom will be if we don’t clean this up.”
Aidan brightened. “I can help!” he announced, waving the brush around, sending more dust flying everywhere.
“Not like that. We need a bigger brush. And cloth. And lots of water. And…” Danny groaned again. “Your mother’s going to kill me. Right after she does lots of violent things to me.”
“Nuh-uh. Mommy loves Daddy! She wouldn’t hurt you.”
He couldn't help the sound that came out of him. What was a man supposed to say to something like that? “Well she might not after this. At the very least, I’m gonna be on couch duty for the next coupla nights.”
Grabbing his leg, Aidan announced, “I’ll stay with Daddy too!”
“Just the Messer boys, huh?”
At the boy’s enthusiastic nod, Danny gave up and laughed. Ruffling his son’s hair, he got to his feet. “Come on, kiddo. We got a lot of evidence to put away before Mommy gets back.”
The same sense that had woken him in the first place tingled up his spine right before he heard the jingling of keys.
“Oh oh,” Aidan said as he whirled around to stare wide-eyed at the door. “Daddy’s in trouble!”
He shot his son a look of disbelief. “Traitor!!” he hissed.
“I’m home! Did you... OH MY GOD...” Lindsay's voice trailed off. Her jaw fell as she took in the powder covering every single inch of the living room, along with her husband.
Aidan ran over and hugged her legs. “Mommy! I missed you! Did you miss me?”
She somehow managed to find her voice. “Of course I did. Come here, little guy.” She gave him a hug, and glared at Danny.
“I was good for Daddy like you said. I even kept really quiet when he fell asleep!”
He was SO busted, not to mention dead. He’d be lucky if he got any pillows to go with the couch tonight.
“Daddy fell asleep and left you the man of the house, huh?”
Danny shivered at the threat laced in her words. Holding his hands up, he approached her the same way he would if he had to dismantle a bomb. “Now, I just closed my eyes for a few seconds. You know the hours I was working and…”
“Aidan, would you help Mommy put away her bags?” At his nod, Lindsay smiled. “What a good boy you are, unlike someone I know.”
“Come on. Be reasonable, Montana,” he practically whined. Almost right away, he could imagine the guys in the lab groaning at the words he used. “No wait, that’s not what I meant to say.”
“What are you trying to say, Danny?”
“Lindsay…”
“You know what? You’re going to…”
Their son came running back in, waving a rose in his hand. “Mommy! Look what I found!”
“Awww, you got me a rose, Aidan?”
Shaking his head, the young boy replied, “Not me, silly. Daddy did! He said he missed you a lot!”
She turned around to look at him, and Danny offered a hopeful smile. Not that he remembered buying the rose, but in all fairness, he’d been two steps away from being unconscious when he came home. Out of the corner of his eye, he noted the devilish smile on Aidan’s face and groaned inwardly. Beaten by a kid. He was almost positive that he would end up paying for this in other ways.
“Did you really, Danny?”
“Oh yeah. You know I hate working all these long hours at the lab. I hated being away from you.” At the narrowing of his son’s blue-eyes, he added, “And Aidan.”
Then, he breathed a sigh of relief when she hugged. “I missed you too, Danny. I’m sorry. I know I haven’t been the nicest person to be around either.”
Pulling back, he remarked, “What are you talking about, Montana? Didn’t notice a thing.”
“Liar,” she said laughingly as she leaned forward to kiss him.
Momentarily forgetting their son’s presence, they made out like teenagers until the sound of Aidan’s giggle snapped them out of it.
“Oops,” Danny said with a grin. “No need to expose him to this so early.”
“Is that where babies come from?”
Both gaped at the seemingly innocent question.
“Aidan! Where did you learn about such a thing?” Lindsay demanded.
The young boy shrugged nonchalantly, the motion looking like the way Danny always did. “Grandpa Sid told me that’s how it starts.”
“Sid!!! How did he get his hands on…” Lindsay asked in shock. “I’m going to…”
Nudging his wife, he gestured for her to look at the grin on the young boy’s face. “My guess? Part two of Don’s revenge.”
“You mean this was Don’s fault?”
“Uncle Don gave me powder! Said there was more where it came from!”
“Oh really?” she drawled. “Aidan, how would you like to visit Uncle Don at work? I’m sure he wants to play with you this Friday!”
Suddenly, Danny felt sorry for his friend at the smile that curved her lips.
“I love Uncle Don!”
… and the nearly identical one on his son’s face.
As Aidan ran off to get his coat in excitement, Lindsay leaned over, whispering, “Just think how much more we can torture Don when we have two.”
He decided to save his sympathies for himself - when he could cry when his wife and son weren't around.
