something that doesn't need batteries, works when the other power is out, that I don't easily misplace and don't have to have my computer on or with headphones to use. Good for emergencies. Also good for my EU friends calling on their special plans (cheap for calling land lines, expensive for calling cells). VOIP is still odd and choppy at that distance even when I feel like dealing with it.

yeah, i haven't had a landline in almost 10 years. I just use voip or a cellphone nowadays. I remember in one of my old apartments, i was introduced to the weird idea that it's cheaper to buy internet AND phone service than just internet service.

Mostly it's for emergencies and so that my friends across the pond can call more easily. VOIP is still choppy and weird from there, and frankly the computer isn't on as often or the headset isn't there... I just missed a real phone.

most people are so used to crap sound quality, they don't realize what they are missing (literally) with a land line. Actually hearing a person without dropping and saying "what, what?" 8 times per call.
