community spaces

I really miss the feel of a campus, or even renn faire. A fairly small area where a high concentration of people you know and love (or at the least enjoy) live. It's so much more easy to just stop in and say hi, or share a meal.

I stopped in today and saw Gary at the wine bar today (the owner). He's always good to visit with, and he has the kind of attentive, casual, friendly care of his customers and business. He makes people feel at home, and cared for. You see that at Faire. My old faire bosses were all pretty good at that. In New Hampshire too- a small town where you actually know the lady at the post office and bank, the man who runs the deli, and the one who owns the cafe, roasts his own coffe in the back, and knows all his customers and their children.

I love that. In the city it's harder. Even when you make those connections- which I have a bit (at the fabric shop, for sure), it's so much harder to just drop by and meet people. Buses, parking, conflicting scheduals... When they live next door or down the street, you can just drop by in that 15 minutes that you have. It's just good to see friendly faces scattered throughout the day, even in moments.

I still want to create a space for that.
