cool family- public health

So I found out that my grandfather is in Wikipedia. He's a badass. They don't list a fraction of what he's done.

My mom is also doing awesome stuff. Just had a couple articles out this week. I like this latest one from the Boston Globe describing a program she helped develop in Chicago that treats urban violence like a disease and public health issue. It worked. Now that she's got a school to run, she's pushing on social justice issues there.

She's had to do a lot of fighting over things like distributing clean needles so people don't spread diesase. The public official's attitude towards drug addicts getting and spreading Aids is "well, so what, they're street people". Such a callous attitude doesn't take into account that even if you don't care if "street people" die, that they spread things to the rest of the population (your votes twit). Sex ed runs up against things too. In the violence education programs, it was employing former gang members, drug dealers etc. But you know- they were essential to the program's success.

Dad's a sociologist, grandmother's an anthropologist, teachers, biologists, social workers... can you can imagine the dinner table conversation I grew up with now?
