Cell Phones are the Devil

Or rather, celluar service providers are.

I have a Nextel phone with Nextel service. The only reason I have this is because I have a NexTel "family" discount which gives me a discount on hardware and a substantial discount on the cost of my plan.

After replacing my lost phone, I've been having nothing but problems. The basic "phone" functionality works in that I'm able to make outbound calls and receive incoming calls, but text messaging and downloadable content is all fux0r3d.

Customer Care is no help whatsoever. I called them last week and after being on hold for 30 minutes and then on the line with them for another 20, they couldn't fix the problems. They can't/won't call me back on my cell-phone, and since I don't have a landline (that I use) at home, the only other number is my work phone. Which I'm only available at Monday - Friday 6AM-2:30PM. Which means the burden is on me to follow up with them, because chances are I'm going to miss their follow-up call (if they even bother to make one). To top it off, Customer Care is fucking closed today. Today ain't no motherfuckin' holiday, yo. Lazy bastards.

At this point, I'm almost ready to say "fuck it" and pay more with another service provider. Thing is, I'm not terribly confident that another provider would be any better.

Fucking cell-phones. Closed networks, crippled phones, bullshit bullshit bullshit.

If they expect me to pay $2.50 for a wallpaper image, I expect it to "just work." I expect text-messaging to work right out of the box.

It would be really fucking nice if the phone's documentation were like, I dunno, ACTUAL documentation with technical specifications and detail about the features. "Press the Menu key and select Settings to access Settings. For further questions, contact customer care." really does not cut it.

In general, I am willing to put up with a certain amount of bullshit when it comes to my appliances; I mean, I run Windows, for fuck's sake, but this is getting ridiculous.

bullshit, technology, support-or-lack-thereof, nextel, cellphone
