So, as of today I have a shiny new laptop but am limping along on the old one while the new one sets itself up, ‘cause I'm just that pathetic.
My computer geek (everyone should marry one of these if they aren't one themselves, btw) determined that making it tolerable would cost more than buying one that is tolerable to start with.

Manual Volume Dial - sounds unimportant, I know, but I really loved this feature
I miss that on my old one too. However now that I've actually had a chance to read the online user manual (been too busy um "using" it) I found an instant mute button hotkey.

OOH! My new one has that! It's the one thing as a feature that always bothered me about the old one. You can always get one for twenty or thirty bucks (I saw one at I think Target or BestBuy that had four usb ports and the calculator!)
My new screen is HUMONGOUS compared to my old one.
Windows XP - this is the big one, kiddies
I've found Windows XP functional, but...having gone through the iterations since 3.0... eh. Actually some of the Vista features are kinda cool. It's a bit flash in the pan for my taste, but not as horrible as I expected. (My version also is the "better" vista apparently.)
Things I won’t:
I'll change your usb ports for a non working modem (seriously you shouldn't have to unplug the thing to get it to disconnect, right? I swear I've been doing workarounds so long I've forgotten how computers are SUPPOSED to work).
5 lb+ weight
Mine's still like 5 and a half pounds, but it's still at least "feels" half the weight of the other one. That thing was HEAVY

YES YES YES (Actually the adaptor actually SMOLDERED ONCE before the warranty ended. I went through like five of those things and kinda cheated to get a spare that wasn't aftermarket before teh warranty gave out).
Think of all the fic you can write on it! Hee!

Sounds good. The new keyboard's kinda rubberized, so I won't even have to fish Doritos out of it very often.

I really wanted smaller and lighter this time around. After lugging my old one through multiple large airports while pregnant, I wanted something a bit more compact. I'll miss the big screen and keyboard, but the fact the new one weighs less than 2.5 lbs was a huge selling point, as I'll be restarting work soon and lugging it back and forth on the bus every day.

I miss that on my old one too.
I have this bad habit of leaving the volume on when I shut down. Then I tend to turn the computer back on during things like meetings or lectures or bus rides and no one needs to hear the start-up "music" at 412 dB. Got in the habit of sliding the volume knob down as the computer was booting up. Can't do that with software driven buttons...though I too have found the hotkey.

It's not so much that I love XP. It's that Vista annoys me. We have it on our desktop. It's...irritating. I guess I'll get used to it. I loathe some of the big brothery stuff about it.

Well, I guess if you've got lots of extras and not a lot of ports on your laptop (there was one I was looking at that only had one or two, so if you're plugging in that numeric keyboard and say have a flash drive...that's taking them both up.

Hee. yeah...um...no. Actually the biggest thing was getting used to the "delete key". It's different on this keyboard. I keep hitting the...I guess it does the screen menu thing. I tend to use the delete key alot while typing, I s'pose. LOL

Ah, okay. They allow you to indirectly link extras to the laptop itself. It all becomes clear.

Yeah, the biggest annoyance I'm finding so far is an extra key in between Shift and Z. It's driving me nuts, but I suppose I'll get used to it. Well, I guess the biggest annoyance is having to rifle through my office looking for all m software discs so I can reinstall everything I use. But the Shift thing is a close second.
