Food snobbery.

This would be a great article except for this little bit:

That being said, anyone who goes into a Thai restaurant asking for "no spice" deserves to be kicked out on their ear. Asking for "no spice" at a Thai restaurant is akin to going to a steakhouse and asking for a veggie burger. It smacks of that very American tradition of "the customer is ( Read more... )

getting judgy about others' spice levels *is* quite ableist!!

I think getting judgy about eating habits in general is rather ableist or at least snooty and rude, especially if you're one of those "EVERYONE MUST EAT THIS!!!!" type person. Umm, not everyone can eat ALL types of foods, yanno? I saw some list that someone put out of 100 foods everyone should eat before they die. Half were either dishes with meat, dishes that I have no idea how anyone not traveling to Kuala Lumpur would get, or dishes with peanuts/wheat/dairy/eggs (which are the four most common food allergies, IIRC).

And I thought, "So I'm a troglodyte if I can't eat these things? Fuck you. Just because you can afford (monetarily and digestively) to eat these foods doesn't mean everyone else can or should."

I get a little pissed at any "things you should do" lists (things to do before you die, books to read, movies to see, etc) because inevitably they assume access and ability that some people may not have and thus exclude people from Being As Cool As Thou for no good damn reason.

Basically, elitism sucks balls.

i get "looks" from the employees, but who cares? if you bring me food i ENJOY, i will TIP YOU WELL, i promise.

See, that's lousy. I don't think waitstaff should be giving looks or judging what a customer orders. I don't care if they order mustard and garlic on their cheesecake, just smile and act like it's the blue plate special, yanno. Other people's food choices are NOT YOUR DAMN BUSINESS. Our society needs to learn this. What other people do and don't eat is not up for review, even if it's weird, even if they're fat.
