Well, that was simple. (NOT!)

Last night we finally succeeded in getting me the blood sugar meter that I needed. Calling the doctor, unfortunately, wasn't going to work because the nurse at her office informed me that her mother had just passed away and her daughter had been hospitalized. I felt horrible that I had kept bugging them after they told me that, but I'm not sure how else I could've known.

So we bit the bullet and got the meter without the discount - which it wouldn't have mattered most. The test strips were, by far, the most expensive part of the whole set up. The meter itself ended up being something like 19.99 even though the price on the box was 79.99. The strips? Were like 80 bucks in and of themselves for 100. So, yeah. Diabetes ain't cheap.

But the silver lining is that after testing, my blood sugar numbers have all turned out really good. Last night, the first test (which happened after I wolfed down two clementine oranges) - read as 87.

For those who don't know a damn thing about blood sugar levels (and I'm using the American mg/dl measurements. European/Canadian folks use the mmol/l measurement) - usually a "normal" fasting glucose is considered anything under 100.

A good post-prandial (after meal, IDK why people use these stupid words) blood sugar level is under 120mg/dl.

So far, I haven't gotten a reading above 96. And that was after eating waffles (with syrup) and a cup of OJ for breakfast - which are both things with some serious sugar and carbs in them. This gives me hope that my body is actually managing things quite well as far as blood sugar goes.

I'm also hoping that in a month when I see the doctor again, after I've been on the monophasic, I'll have lost some weight. Because I'd really, really, REALLY love it if the results came back and showed that I just needed to change my birth control pill. That would be super. Or that the problem is something else I can fix that isn't insulin-related.

So, thus far, so far so good.

health, meds, insulin resistance
