I just read Descartes' Third Meditation and it's fascinating, despite the fact that he's attempting to prove the existence of God. I like the way he writes, methodically and yet interestingly. I think Meditations On First Philosophy is perhaps one of my favorite books (AND philosophy books) now.

In other philosophy news, tonight I am going to see Aliens of the Deep for the Philosophy and Film series, and I'm dragging some friends along with me. As you know, the last one was A Clockwork Orange, and Justin and Henry came. I think philosophy is definitely a social activity...a weird one though, because you spend half your time reading (or, in this case, watching a movie) alone and isolated and the other half surrounded by peers, discussing and alive. Not to imply that reading is by definition inactive.

That reminds me! Yesterday and also last week I visited Lisa Bates' office hours and we talked about feminism and philosophy. It was pretty cool. It reminded me that one of my goals last year had been to hang out in professors' offices more often...I'm livin' the dream, baby!!

I still need to get my own philosophy movie nights started though...an idea that I've been talking about since FOREVER! I guess I'm afraid that I'll invite people and they won't want to come, or that they'll have a terrible time. I want people to come because they want to watch movies and discuss the concepts behind them, not because they feel obligated because I invited them, or even really just to hang out (although, of course, hanging out will also be involved).

Oh well. I guess this life is a process of self-actualization anyway, and that involves coming to terms with my insecurities and then doing what I want anyway (assuming, of course, that it's not illegal or something. But if you know me, then you know it wouldn't be).

friends, philosophy, professors
