Liz squirms in her seat a little as they introduce the presenters for the next award. (Her award.) She doesn't even know who they are. Probably former 'MILF Island' contestants, she laughs nervously to herself.
They read out the nominations for Best Variety, Music or Comedy Series. She hears "TGS with Tracy Jordan" and some applause. The camera lands on Tracy (who sticks his tongue out) and not Jenna (who scowls murderously in his direction). She just bites her lip, again.
She can feel her heart pounding, her blood racing and her breath coming quicker (and should she be feeling this light-headed?). All the writers and actors sitting around her have nervous anticipation plastered across their faces (except Tracy; she doesn't quite know what that expression is). Jack, sitting next to her, looks completely calm. Like he couldn't care less. (She hopes she's wrong.)
The presenters wait for what seems like forever after "And the Emmy goes to..." (Oh great, she thinks, she's working in clichés now.)
And then, finally. She doesn't know what they say. But she knows they don't say "TGS with Tracy Jordan". The disappointment is crushing. Tracy slams his head against the table and it thankfully muffles his wails, while Grizz and Dot Com console him. Jenna looks like she does when Yolanda doesn't send anything for months. Frank takes off his "winner" hat. Everyone else looks strangely blank as they clap half-heartedly. And Jack, well, Jack looks the same as he did a minute ago.
Her mind starts reeling with the consequences; the show will get cancelled now, surely. She'll be unemployed and then there's no way she'll afford to pay her rent and she'll have to move to one of those horrible little places with boarded windows and, oh God, she'll never be able to afford cable... She thinks she might cry.
Then she feels something on one of her hands (and when did they start shaking?). She looks down, confused, and sees Jack larger hand clutching hers. His thumb rubs gently back and forth across the back of her hand. It's oddly soothing and she feels herself clutching his hand in return.
Then she feels warm breath at the side of her face. "You should have won, Lemon." he whispers and squeezes her hand tight.

Awwww! So lovely, so simple, and so indicative of their bond.
My absolute favorite part of this, though, were everyone else's reactions -- Tracy being all loud and... well, Tracy. Jenna and the mention of Yolanda -HAHA! Frank and his hat, etc. Very in-character.

Thank you so much!! :D
Oh God, I'm so glad you said "in-character" cos that's what I was worried about!! lolz
I think I will. I wasn't planning on writing any and then I saw the prompt and the story just shot straight into my head and practically wrote itself in about ten minutes! lol.

This was brilliant. The small details in this just made it absolutely amazing. There was something about Frank taking off his "winner" hat that made me incredibly sad. But then the adorable hand-holding came at the end, and it made it all better. :)

Oh, I loved this. Absolute favorite line was: Jenna looks like she does when Yolanda doesn't send anything for months. Just so hilarious. In that sad, wistful way that's the tone of this piece.

I can't even begin to profess how much I love this. Every detail you included was perfect. And the hand holding - oh, the hand holding! Thank you for doing that, Jack.

Somehow, it doesn't all seem so bad now.
