It was a typical day at the flower shop. I was working away - dusting, Windexing, folding tissue paper - when a young-ish man walked in. He was calm, subtle. He indicated (with the help of a muted British accent) that he would like a bouquet of fresh cut flowers, and in response to my questioning, stated that he would like some white daisies ("I guess they're mums, aren't they?" [they were daisies]) and some pink and red carnations. I started building this bouquet. I filled the ensuing silence by asking if the flowers were for a special occasion. He looked at me, paused, gave a very slight shrug of his shoulders, and said, "It's Thursday."
I probably stood in one spot grinning into a vast emptiness for an uncomfortably long time, because he continued speaking. "I think that too often people forget about the little things, like bringing flowers home on Thursday." Work was long. I had problems with the cash, I had to hand an order over to Sue because I couldn't handle it (stupid complicated casket spray), and I left half an hour late, but I caught a glimpse of the better side of humanity. It's like tin foil - simple and shiny. Comments such as "It's Thursday" make me happy. In the right context, of course. You know, he didn't smile once while he was in the store. Inspiration can come from the most unlikely sources.
I was also grateful for the women who I talked to on the phone today, particularly the ex-florist. She was the one who ordered the casket spray. She started talking about costs, and various flowers, and some mysterious greenery called "salal". I don't know how much the container costs, how much is charged for labour, how many dozens of carns she could get or even how big the casket spray would be, but she was entirely patient and exceedingly kind. And then I had Sue call her. So that worked out as well as it could have, considering my profound lack of knowledge. Yes, it's so shallow it's profound.
Let the records show that this day has been an interesting one. Ah yes, and I've disabled comments. I don't really know why.
