WHAT: A dance! With mandatory dates!
WHEN: Saturday, March 3rd (Cait's birthday!), 8 PM to Midnight
WHERE: Amelia Earhart High School.
WHO: Practically everyone.
The island obviously expects a big turnout at the dance, because they've set aside both the gymnasium and the football field, stringing blue, white and green christmas lights liberally over the area, decorating with excessive arcs of crepe paper and glitter, and having separate DJs in the endzone outside and under the basketball hoop at one end of the gym. There are punch-bowls set at strategic intervals, not enough chairs for the inevitable wallflowers to use, and weary-looking teachers press-ganged into acting as chaperones. Whether this causes nostalgia or existential terror in the older dancers will of course vary, but there's one other peculiar thing about this dance: the DJ's playlist ranges from
Ice Ice Baby and
Everybody Dance Now through
This Is How We Do It and
Gangsta's Paradise and all the way to
Genie in a Bottle, but nothing beyond that. Sad to say,
you are all being required to
Party Like It's 1999 (or earlier). Hope you're ready to
Macarena.
The ennui-ridden chaperones will stamp your hands with cutesy ink stamps as you enter and jot down your names -- but they'll warn you that nobody leaves until the dance is done, and they have a chance to stamp your hands again. If you can't show two stamps to the Stipend Office on Monday, no check for you this month.
