It’s Meme Time, Baby! - The Answers

… or “Why does the fucking real life always interfere with my writing plans?”

Okay, first of all, I’m really sorry. I never intended it to take quite do long to answer a few simple questions (or not so simple, as it turned out), but real life really has its way of getting in the way of writing - so much in fact that I haven’t even gotten around to write about how and why it’s getting in the way. But I hope to do so soon.
Well, anyways,

failte_aoife and

cricri_72 asked me some questions about TV shows and here are the answers:

So,

failte_aoifes questions were:

1. if you could reboot one TV show, which one would it be?
Hm, this is a tough question. There have been a few TV shows I really loved in the beginning and then lost interest in or even outright hated later on, because of what the show runners made of it. Criminal Minds, CSI Las Vegas, Torchwood, Kommissar Rex, just to name a few. But I think, the one show I’d most likely reboot is SK Kölsch after season six - or was it five? Chronology gets really wild in the final season...

There was this point towards the end, when Haupt, who had been Jupp’s boss since the pilot episode left and Jupp applied for his post. As

tlen2 remarked once, it would have made for an interesting change had he actually gotten the job. For Jupp of all people to suddenly find himself behind the desk and not in front of it, to actually be the paper pusher he so often had nothing but contempt for. It would have been a challenge and a real chance for character growth. But sadly, character growth is not exactly the strong suit of many German TV shows, so the forewent the opportunity, brought in Gesine Westphal and played the old cliché of the macho cop and his tough female boss. Everything went downhill from then on. I mean, yeah, Jupp could be damn macho and dickhead, but the behaviour he exhibited in that last season was way ooc even for him.

So, if I could reboot SK Kölsch, I would do two things: Give Jupp Haupt’s job and bring back Taube. And with that I would introduce an overarching story arc in which Jupp’s gets the chance to finally grow up and Jupp and Klaus could work though their unresolved feelings for each other (Yes, “Turteltäubchen”, I’m looking at you!) and get together eventually.

(And yes, the basic idea for this story is already planned out in my head and a few scattered documents…)

4. what's your comfort show?
Well, on the risk of loosing any respectability or credibility I might have gained at some point in my life, but the truthful answer to this question would be “Alarm für Cobra 11”, specifically the 15th season.
Cobra 11 has been my guilty pleasure for over 20 years now and even though I don’t follow the newer season so closely anymore, it’s still my No. 1 go to TV show. I can quote the episodes of the 15th season backwards already, but whenever I need to escape the harsh real world for a few hours, I’ll put the DVD in the player and just shut out everything.

16. are there any shows on your “to watch” list right now?
Not a whole show, but I’ve been planning to watch “Doctor Who” Seasons 8-11 (12th & 13th Doctor) for quite some time now.
I used to watch it regularly back when David Tennant was the 10th Doctor, but I had some difficulties to warm up to Matt Smith as 11th Doctor, so I kind of dropped out. But I love Peter Capaldi and what I’ve seen from his Doctor so far was very much to my liking. And of course, I have to see the first female Doctor, if only for the courage they had to really go through with it.

23. favourite TV show theme song?
That would be “Faith of the Heart”, the theme song of “Star Trek Enterprise”

cricri_72 asked:

2. if you could have saved one TV show from cancellation, which one would it be?
I think, this would have been Star Trek Enterprise (the prequel series). I really loved this show, the last episode was crappy as hell and from what I heard, they had some really cool ideas for season 5.
Sadly, nobody asked me.

5. which shows do you think are underrated and need more love?
Hm, to be perfectly honest, I have no idea. Many shows I watch are really main stream.
SK Kölsch or Doppelter Einsatz are always good candidates, but since they no longer run in TV (except for reruns and even those are rare) I’m not sure they count. Of course, there are some Tatort Teams that could never get enough love in my eyes, like Thorsten and Sebastian, Till and Felix and Franz and Ivo. And Inga, of course, but after yesterday that’s a whole different story…

13. do you tend to stick to one type of TV show (eg, short-form comedy), or are you into many different genres?
While genre is not the first thing I look for in any new TV show I try, it still seems I have a preference for crime and sci-fi shows: Criminal Minds, CSI NY, CSI, Star Trek TNG, Star Trek VOY, Star Trek ENT, Star Trek TOS, Doctor Who, Torchwood, SK Kölsch, Mit Herz und Handschellen, Doppelter Einsatz, Alarm für Cobra 11, Kommissar Rex, Tatort, Die Cleveren, Numb3rs. With Alphateam - Lebensretter im OP and Queer as Folk being the notable exceptions.

But if the premise and the characters get to me, I would try almost any genre, except for politics maybe.

34. which TV show setting would you most like to visit?
Star Trek. Even though I know most oft the good stuff was done via green screen. But walking down those corridors or sit in the captain’s chairs just once would have been so great.

38. if you could change 1 detail about any show, what would you change and why?
Killing Ianto Jones in Torchwood Season 3. While I get that his death was necessary for the way the story was told, it still annoyed me to no end. Since they played on Jacks feelings for Gwen the whole show (much to the annoyance of many fans), they could have easily killed her instead. But then, she was straight, and you don’t kill straight characters for plot reasons, when you have a queer to spare, right?
