Play on words, resting on the harsh pronunciation of d in day.
I finished my Christianity paper early int he day yesterday. Then I thought I'd call a tow truck so I could, I don't know, get that mechanical body that's been sitting in the driveway behind the house immobile for the past three weeks out of there, to a garage, to maybe ... fix the mobility problem?
Well,
I spent about an hour dancing on the phone with the insurance people, because I don't have anything material pertaining to the car's insurance, because that'd just be too easy and make too much sense, right? Like, how keeping hold of a car that needs some repairs until it gets repairs, instead of handing it over to the person you owe it to only to have it lapse into a car-coma two days later, would make too much sense, right? Yes, I'm still a little annoyed over that, and also over how I waited two damn weeks to get a list of what-all was done to the car so that the mechanics it will be seeing sometime soon will know what (not) to look at. Realizing finally that it was a ridiculous notion to think that I'd ever see that list in a year ending in '09, I'm ready to proceed without it. And also realizing finally that once the insurance people finally procured a tow truck for me, after I explained to them the elegance of the fucked-up situation--not only will the car not start because something keeps draining the battery, it's also stuck behind the house at the end of a narrowly-built, 60-degree-angled driveway and has two flat tires--the tow truck showed up not in 50 minutes like they said it would (so I thought I'd have time to go to the ATM to pull out the cash that I'd have to pay the guy in), it showed up in 5, and didn't have the pumps to air up the tires long enough to get it rolling down the driveway.
So fuck relying on anyone else, because I see where even on a professional basis where it'll get me. So I found my own tow-guys with a smaller truck, that on a good day could back up the driveway to rig up the car and get her out of here.
On a good day.
Unfortunately I didn't take the initiative soon enough of moving the car out sans the list I'm never going to get because my dad, like me, just doesn't get around to that little peripheral stuff usually. Had I done this last weekend I might have a mobile car today. No, instead I wasn't able to get the ball rolling until mid-afternoon on a Sunday, when it's cold and wet outside. Emphasis on wet. The pavement, enhanced by the wet leaves everywhere, is currently too slick for the two truck to back up the driveway.
So, on the bright side, I know who to call, and I only have to wait on the weather conditions. They said when it dries up later this week, give them a call back and we can resume operations. I can wait till the weekend, if need be.
Should the wetness persist, there's always the alternate route of charming or pleading with someone to take me somewhere to buy two new tires, switch them out with the flat ones, and then do the whole neutral coast thing down to the street, while probably riding the brake, and then any tow truck would be able to rig it up.
These things are fixable. It's just a matter of a lot of patience, or resignation, or combination thereof.
In the meantime my upstairs neighbors watched out the window and made the failed towing attempt their piece of Blue Collar Comedy for the day. After the tow guys left I hung out upstairs for a little while and in turn laughed at one very hung-over neighbor while he drank Pedialite and talked about throwing up. Then I stole what was left of his sweet potatoes off the landing. They're not big enough to really bake, but we can make fries out of them or something. Take that, elitist bastards.
I have one paper left that I need to work on, for the Faulkner class. It's due tomorrow and I wrote about a third of it yesterday evening while nursing a headache that I think was a product of getting soaked in the rain while we attempted the tow, and then the attempt failed. Now I'm going to Coffee Break and getting breakfast because, once again, I fell back asleep after the alarm went off and came into class late as it was. Then I'm going to work toward finishing this.
Here's to a (hopefully) better week, overall.
weekend,
suck!,
