Back from the bookstore. Wow... I already had my list of books for my classes, and I'd added up the "NEW" prices just so my total would be on the safe side. I got a book voucher for a little beyond it, also on the safe side. But uh ... maybe I didn't take tax into account or something, because even with the few used books I managed to find, the fucking total came quite close to $500. *sobs* Bleeding me dry, dammit! I had to make a dash back to my room to get some cash to supplement my voucher with before I could pay for the books.
Job. Get one. After this damn cold's over. Don't want potential employer's first look of me being sick me.
I blame it on the science texts. They're like the most expensive ones (my Psychology book last fall was over a hundred, and if one rounds this Biology text for this semester's closer to 200 ==+). My sympathies to the poor science majors. Luckily I think I have my core things for the science stuff pretty much done after this semester, so from next semester on out I hope think things will be less expensive.
X-L apparently doesn't have the best phone reception. I can't really make or take calls in our room, though it works well enough in the lobby. In our room though I guess it doesn't even ring sometimes when someone's calling, so it wasn't until after noon when the Help Desk was closed (though I should be a little glad; usually I don't think they're even open on Sundays) that I discovered I had a voice mail from the guy I left my tower with (that must have been a sight: I had to carry the tower out of X-L, up by the soccer field, past Massman Hall, and fortunately someone held the door into Conway for me because both hands were so full with that that I had to hold the chain with my swipe between my teeth). I had left the tower there so they could do the McAfee thing, but his message said they were having problems with one thing or another (my tower was a bit of an enigma to them; they couldn't find a number or brand on it or anything, so it is the Anonymous Black Tower). Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the voice mail, and this fellow didn't leave any notes with the tower so the people who were there first thing this morning weren't sure what was up with it when I went in to see what I could do to help. So we must wait for when this guy comes in later today (or he might be in by now, I'm not sure), and then they have my number, and we'll go from there. I'd really like to have this sorted out and fixed and have my tower back by when they close at seven this evening, but if need be sometime tomorrow morning wouldn't be too bad...
My current PC-less state hasn't been too maddening so far. Yesterday afternoon Stephanie, Galen and myself trekked over to Loose Park (named for Jacob L. Loose, but I still laughed a little at the name) and semi-crashed this picnic held by one of the churches Stephanie attends (she church-hops the ones within walking distance). The food was great; they even had some really good-looking veggie burgers, which I didn't taste because they weren't ready until after I'd gotten my food, but still I think that's cool; you don't go to every function where they offer a lot of vegetarian-friendly food (and there was lots of it at this picnic; my favorite thing was this salad of some green I once ate with shrimp at P.F. Chang's, red onion, red cabbage, green onion, carrot, some dressing, and pieces of uncooked ramen noodles--nice and crunchy and delicious). Apparently I'm of a rare type of person who isn't really freaked out by bees. (Well hell, I've passed the last few months sharing my room with wasps and the bathroom with a particular one I named Avispa.) Then we went over to Galen's house, which was about 15 or 20 minutes' walk from the park and in a really nice neighborhood (his parents are both Law professors at UMKC, which explains it). Very gorgeous houses. William met us there about half an hour later (this was a bit after 7 in the evening) and we didn't leave until 11:30. Then we finally encountered Galen's roommate Paul (that's what's on the door; he introduced himself as P.J.), and uh ... Stephanie and I got back to our room shortly before 1:30, so I probably got to bed around 2 after showering. Hehe.
Uh, when not doing that I've done a sketch for a piece I want to do in the ind. art course. The title might be ... shit, I forgot, I wrote it down in the sketchbook ... something like Chimera of wandering thoughts in Philosophy class. It's what happens when you're in LaCroix's PL 1000 class one April afternoon and you're doodling in the margins thinking about Yomi from YYH, then the Faun from Pan's Labyrinth, then the laboratory scenes in Dir en Grey's "Obscure" video, then the cover of the Death and Dying in the Tibetan Tradition book with the funky meditating monk/demon guy thing. End result is our Chimera sitting on a Fire-Lotus Throne ... thing. Uh, when I get my tower back I'll scan in the sketch and share, so you have an actual idea of what this guy looks like. (He is the King of anime-del Toro-J Rock-spiritualist surrealism!)
I've also been working on a "Jagamino" scene that I cut out of the Chapter 17 drafts. It might become the opening scene for Chapter 18, but right now it's too early to tell. I might use it as a teaser once it's a bit more polished.
Anyway, now I'm going to go read or drink (smoothie blend--yea C Monster) or ... do something that doesn't involve spending not-on-the-school-credit money.
(Oh! I did see--crap, I'm going to spell his name wrong--Chanaka when I was hanging around the Financial Aid office earlier. First of the basement gang I've seen since getting back. I should stalk Kristen till the others show up, probably on Wednesday...)
