I heard brain washing defined as a viral meme.

Two thoughts...
1) Isn't using viral redundant?

perhaps it's a virulent meme? That's closer, at least.

(I particularly like the latin source of 'virulent', virulentus, which according to wikipedia means "a poisoned wound" or "full of poison".)

Actually, as I understand it, brainwashing is more like a full course of memetic anti-biotics, clearing you of all flora, good and bad, and then infecting you with the chosen meme, when the field is fertile yet free of competition.
