Views on humanity...

I'm going to tell you two stories and let you draw your own conclusions.

1) I'm walking home today and find an old copper colored short haired dog *slowly* walking down the middle of the busy street. Obviously the guy got a little lost. I run out, introduce myself and get the good dog out of the road. He has a rabies tag with a vets phone number. I call the number and am giving the receptionist the number on the tag and my phone number so the owners can call me. During this call I am approached by five people who offer help, one of which returns shortly with a leash to loan me. All of them offer to take the friendly dog off my hands to hold as I complete the call. Once we have the leash and the name of the dog from the Vet (Scratch for the record), I ask Scratch to show me his home. We walk down a few side streets and he goes into a yard and lies down next to a dog bowl and a broken leash. The owner chooses that moment to call and I ask them to meet me in their side yard. The lady who loaned me the leash was happy to hear that Scratch knew where home was. (Please note the FIVE people who offered help.

2) Last week I walk into the parking lot of the train station and find an elderly man on his knees in the middle of the lot. He looks a bit disoriented and is sweating slightly. I try to help him up and he makes it two steps before he is sliding back down. I call 911 and keep him talking until the EMT's arrive. I was juggling my phone, holding him up and waving to the EMTs to let them know where the old gentleman was. I think it's important to note that the man was friendly, pleasant and admitted to having "a drink or two". There were at least 25 people at the station, watching. Not a single offer of help.

So... You go ahead and draw your conclusions. I'm going to keep hoping that someday people will be as good as dogs.
